It does leave a sour taste, though..............suddenly it's not quite so incredible anymore. Perhaps they need to find a more suitable adjective - chaotic / blinkered spring to mind, and I'm being kind here.............

GOOD LUCK. Keep the vultures starving:thumbdown::thumbdown:

and you can't even give away your property to a well deserved local unless one of you pays something like 40% tax!

I feel the same as you Noni, i'd rather give everything away to friends than let someone have one over on me, everyone wants something for nothing here, i know its classed as "second hand" but we brought every new and paid big bucks for it.
I did the same thing in the UK when our buyer offered us silly money for a 6 month old washing machine and fridge/freezer, we had a farewell party and gave everything away to family and friends rather than leave it for the greedy bastard....
Last monsoon when i was away OH had a guy stay as he had a tiny little wet smelly room to live in, he was well happy and OH enjoyed his company...

long-term capital gains (if you had the property for more than 3 years) is approx. 20% of profits (allowing for inflation).
short term gains (less than 3 yrs) is the same rate as income tax - a sliding scale rising to approx. 30% on (that part of) income over 8 lakhs a year.

So nothing like 40% noni - but also remember that you can't legally re-patriate the profit (although if you are 'resident' there are supposed to be relaxed rules about foreign exchange 'for any purpose').

I said GIVE IT AWAY TO A LOCAL, BUT was told one of us would have to pay up to 40%

Re: Visa help.

reply to a-f-d - thanks for that info about capital gains tax.

Someone (an Indian neighbour) also mentioned "index linking" to me when we were discussing property selling.

She told me that you pay capital gains on the difference between what you sell the property for and its current index-linked value.

So, if you bought for, let's say, 30 lakh in 2002, the index-linked value could today be 32 lakh, and this would reduce the amount of profit you pay C.G. Tax on.

I haven't fully investigated this yet, but was wondering if anyone else had any information............

Why pay more than is necessary, is my motto!!

Cheers.

yes, indexation is applied to the purchase price, also cost of extensions/ improvements. The govt publish index tables just as in the UK.
I would advise anyone selling to hire a Chartered Accountant to handle it - you'll need a CA report anyway to repatriate the money (excluding profit)

I do too. And I like to hear people's opinions whether I agree with them or not. What I cannot abide however are rude ignorant people who generalise on everything. That all Goans are going to 'gob' on us and that all expats who stay in Goa for the Monsoon are drunks. That comment by a certain 'lady' is quite offensive. You have to feel sorry for her, it's such an unfortunate manner to be afflicted with.

The comment was all tourist Indian are more likely to be in this frame of mind, to spit not Goan, as I read it. And as I said, Goan has no time for Indian tourist with all their faults, spitting being the least of them.

Re: Visa help.

edited link so hope working:
THE grief-stricken family of an Island man found dead in India have been told it could be months before his body can be flown home.
John Matthews, of Atherley Road, Shanklin, was found dead in Goa on March 29, while on a 90-day backpacking holiday.
It is thought he was out celebrating his 49th birthday, when his body was found on a beach.
His brother, David Matthews, who lives in Luton, has been told it could cost the family thousands of pounds to fly John’s body home, if they don’t wait for the results of a toxicology report, expected to take up to two years.
David said: "We have been told it is going to cost us more than £3,000 to fly John’s body back to the UK, because the Indian government is waiting for results of a toxicology report.
"It is money I do not have and the price is rising every day he is out there.
"John took out two lots of insurance before he went but now we are being told they won’t pay to fly his body back until the toxicology reports come back, which we are told, could take up to two years."

anyone read the book called The Ganja Coast (?) - it tells that one of the oldest and most despicable scams in Goa is demanding massive bakshish to release FN's bodies. It goes so far as to suggest that in the past (?) people have been killed simply for that purpose.

That is about as sick and twisted as it gets.
I bet if his family wanted to go to Goa to bring him back, they would have hassle getting visas !

Has anyone heard any more about the two month rule being changed? The last I read (The Times Delhi) they were thinking of changing the rules to be three entries on a multiple entry visa with a possible fourth entry on application. I, and no doubt many others would like to know what, if anything is happening before booking flights for next season.

Spoke to a friend of mine today who lives in Goa. She tells me that several people she knows on tourist visas have gone to Sri Lanka to renew and have been successful and been back in Goa within a week.
Maybe a fluke but sounds promising.

Sounds promising, Dread - but with new 6 month multiple entry T visas, or only 3 month?

And is the 2 month between visits clause still endorsed on the visas?

Please keep this thread purely for visa issues.

I have received two emails from Simon to-day in respect of the email I sent him regarding visa's for home owners in India, and also I have a reply regarding the BHI meeting which I will post on the appropriate site.

With regard to the visa issue - this is part of Simon's reply, he really is :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: against a brick wall.
he has sent numerous emails to the HCI asking:-

"I would be grateful for advice about what visas British Nationals who have a residence in India should apply for. Obviously it would not seem appropriate for them to apply for tourist visas (not least since the revised guidelines of December 2009 are very clear that this type of visa would not be right)"

Hi All

If I exited India on business visa, can I return within two months on a tourist visa?

VFS say yes and issued visa, HCI say no and I must apply for re-entry ???

Don't fancy booking my return ticket until I find out for sure.
thanks

You can re-enter IMMEDIATELY on if you didn't leave on a T visa -
just read the MHA FAQ pages -
the two month rule ONLY applies to people leaving and re-entering on Tourist visas - period.
In my experience the immigration people at the airports know this.
And VFS don't issue visas - if you've got one it was issued by the HCI.
