1) PJ is wrong 2) a_f_d has a reading comprehension issue 3) a_f_d now is 'wrong' about FEMA which does not mention visa types All the above are according to you 'avocadogreen' & now you are 'having a pop about the property situation' - you have therefore outed yourself as a *****TROLL***** & should be ignored from this point on. I've now tried to do the same regarding these new visa rules and am being vilified, so "it's déjà vu all over again", as the saying goes. Well, OK then. Feel free to ignore me, not that I plan to spend more time around this site anyway, as it seems to be filled with the blind leading the blind as far as I can tell. |
Re: Visa help.
Folks, I understand this is a stressful situation, but please let's not resort to name calling.
Do your best to share information and be factual; citations from official sites and first & second-hand reports help. thanks |

However, As far as I am aware, In the not-so-distant past, the above statement, (apparently made by Andy) was true! There was NO stipulation that you would have to be on any particular Visa whilst completing the required number of days entitling a person to buy property. As most people are now painfully aware, the situation has now changed / been clarified. There are some members on this site who obviously do plenty of research, in order to give good, knowledgeable, helpful replies to other members queries and problems. (I dont fit into this category) Andy is one of them! Avocadogreen, If you feel the need to let off some more steam, I suggest you just go out on the road and shout at some passing cars or cows. (personally, I dont think you are doing much different on here) It is now my turn, to be verbally attacked/villified by Avocadogreen! |

Well I really had absolutely no intention of starting a flame war!
... but a couple of points: exemption I mentions side trips exemption II may also be referring to side trips but does not specifically mention them the new info on the VFS site now says that where an itinerary is submitted a visa will be issued specifically for that route (it doesn't say whether on passport or on a letter - which I believe has always been done for Pakistan etc. origin applicants). It does NOT say that other applicants will be given single-entry visas, which I think would be logical. (That's because of my reading comprehension problem - when reading official or technical stuff I try to work out what the words say and not what the authors may have meant). btw it seems that from now on all US applicants for Indian visas will find themselves doing a reading comprehension and memory test! <warning - pdf> AndyD 8-)# |

Re: Visa help.
Has anyone actually had their visa stamped with the two month rule. A visit today to the Immigration department at Dabolim resulted in being told by them that Goa has not been given any instructions to stamp anyones passport. They also said that as far as they know neither has Mumbai.
Does anyone know different!! I am confused. |

Can anyone tell me how to find the new visa rules from the MHA home page?
http://mha.nic.in/pdfs/FAQ-TVisa311209.pdf still works, but I couldn't find out how to navigate to it from the home page, and knowing how good Indian govt sites are at leaving out of date pages floating around but just deleting the links to them ..... AndyD 8-)# |

And that's what we were given that time, tho' we had applied for 6 month tourist visas. They assured us that the Entry (X) visa was extendable within India, and could be done as soon as we got back to Delhi.... As we are normally some 16 hours travel distant from Delhi, we did give it a try straight away and had an unbelievable amount of run-around. We learnt that if you are visiting the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi, you need to present yourself in the first place at 8:30am, and then you are virtually guaranteed to get a number which will entitle you to see someone that day - even tho' it may (and did) take all day. Only the first 150 or so people were given tickets that day and those who arrived around 10:30 (as we had done the day before) were told they shouldn't waste their time, but come earlier the next day! Some people waited anyway, but they made the wrong choice! Ok, the rest of it went like any visit to an Indian bureaucracy, lots of lining up, filling up the same information over and over again, telling the same thing to a number of people who were gradually getting more and more senior, learning to trim down and tailor our story to what they want to hear and as little else as possible.... you can fill in the details yourself. When it got close to 5:30 pm and there were still 50 or more people who had not been dealt with, the mood got ugly and there was a bit of a mini-riot of pushing and shoving (we were in a confined space anyway, and it was heavily congested!). A young volunteer nurse had a panic attack and I got trodden on, and my foot badly hurt, (one toe was still in bad shape months later!) With my daughter's help, I managed to get up onto a chair, and the nurse responded to drops of Rescue Remedy... anyway.... to get back to the story - in the end - just before 6pm - we were given sealed letters addressed to our local Foreigner's Registration Office... and told to deliver them within 10 days. One person tore their letter open on the spot and was then told they would have to come back tomorrow to get it replaced in a sealed envelope... I don't know if he did... but the possibility that we might have to stopped us from opening ours, tho' we did learn what they said, eventually. The letters turned out to say that the MHA had no objection to our being granted an extension on our visas. The FRO was to make such enquiries as they saw fit, and to report back to the MHA for final confirmation. We had a contact in the local FRO, but even with his help, it took the next 3 months of hassling to try and get an extension - even after they had reported that we were harmless and living here quietly on pensions and not doing any business, teaching, spying, attempting to convert people to Xtianity... etc. We got to fill out some more forms - not just in triplicate which we were accustomed to by now, but in sextuplicate! Yes, 6 copies of the same form. We were aided in this task by some tatty old much used sheets of carbon paper (warning to people who are too young to know about carbon paper - don't get it on your clothes!! Finally, after another 3 months had passed (after the end of the 3 months visa we had been granted I mean - now 6 months after our visa trip) without a response from the MHA, the local office gave us a "NOC" so we could leave the country without any problem. In this case the letter said that they had "No Objection to us leaving the country after the expiry date of our visas, and that it was because the application for extension was still under process." This worked fine at Delhi airport, and the immigration guys weren't bothered at all. I estimate we spent at least a week full-time on this task - not counting the 2 days in Delhi which we would not normally have spent there, one of them spent at the MHA from 8:30am to 6pm. And so, even with help, and plenty of willingness on the part of the local FRO and apparently at the MHA also, we were not successful in getting an extension. Of course, it worked out the same way for us in the end, in that we had 6 months more of living in India, but it would have been awkward if we had been trying to travel within India during those last 3 months, after our visas had expired, and while we were technically overstayers... After that experience, we went back to our home country and were granted 6 month Tourist visas again, without any problem. And were happy to get them, and gave up on what might be the more technically correct option in favour of what was do-able. @felicity-t
Hi, sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations, but at least you got some extension to your visa which is more than we mananged: In February 2008 we were issued 1yr X visas in the UK, we travelled out to Goa, returning to theUK in May. We came back to Goa in September 2008 after a couple of weeks here we went to the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi (a three hour flight from Goa) to enquire about extending our visas, we were told to come back nearer to the time they expired. We went back in January 2009 and applied for 12-month extensions. We were prepared to travel directly to the UK from Delhi if these were refused but at the MHA we were handed a sealed envelope with instructions that it should be taken un-opened to the Superintendent of Police (Foreigners Section) back in Goa. We did this only to be informed that they would not give us an extension (we still were not allowed to see what was in the envelope). Our lawyer in Goa subsequently made a Freedom of Information application and found out that the extension had been refused in Delhi. One of the policemen at Panjim FRO said it was crazy - why make people spend around a lakh of Rupees on a trip to the UK when the money could have been spent in Goa! AndyD 8-)# |

Does anyone know different!! I am confused. Hi, although I am not an expat I love Goa we have been visiting here over that last 20 year and was hoping to become a long termer in the very near future. Ive been visiting this site for the last couple of years and have found it both interesting and informative a few years ago our dream was to buy a place in Goa but through reading here soon realised that it wouldnt be possible. We then set our sights on perhaps renting somewhere each year between Oct and May, but I somehow think that we may have to start looking elsewhere. Jules |

Re: Visa help.
My husband is returning home as his Mother has died but after flying into LHR before he can travel up north where she lived he has to go to the Indian High Commission in London with his passport, a copy of his Mothers death certificate, the completed application form, £7.00, a photograph and a reply paid envelope so they will post it back to our home address, This is so he can hopefully get back into India in less than two months.
Some friends went home for Christmas but have had to stay in the UK for two months because although they have multiple entry tourist visas that do not have the two month restriction on them they were not allowed in when they tried to return I am staying here just in case they do not allow us back and one of us needs to be here because we have family arriving soon. |

Re: Visa rip off
I have had a two year multi-entry Business visa renewed without problem since 2002 (due to my association with an Indian company). This time I duly applied and sent all requirements as usual plus a total of £169 fee plus extras. Without explanation I received a one year visa and no refund of £55 difference. They could see my visa history in my passport so it was nothing new. No joy contacting VFS - not their problem. Does India really 'encourage foreign direct inward investment'? I think not and am seriously wondering why I bother. Daylight robbery to let you apply and pay and then keep the difference. How much are they creaming off doing this? Can't even get the cheaper Tourist visa now with this ridiculous 2 month before re-entry rule. - got us screwed as usual. Will just have to take valuable days off work plus travel to go to collect in person -will cost more than the £55 they pocketed!!

It is on the US website now as well. http://www.indianembassy.org/newsite/visa.asp ‘There should be a gap of at least 2 months between two visits to the country on a Tourist Visa. In case of requirement to visit the country within 2 months, permission should be sought from the Head of Mission concerned. In such cases, registration would be required within 14 days of arrival.’ It's not as if they are here illegally or without seeking the proper channels! And there is, of course, overman's example. just after implementing visa on arrivals to encourage tourism, India does this? Shooting themselves in the foot, I'll say! What the heck is a "head of Mission"? And I'll be you they're not advising people of this as they're leaving the country! P.S. Privilege or not, it is ridiculous to change the rules with no notice whatsoever to visa holders, other than a tiny notice on the embassy website. Many people are here legitimately on tourist visa long term as there is no other option for people here who aren't getting paid & aren't students (e.g. research, language learning, volunteering, etc). I have friends who were TOLD to get a tourist visa by immigration as that is "for people who aren't making money." Who the hell is Head of Mission - come in Dr. Spock:rolleyes::rolleyes: At least these other countries have visa's up to 10 years saves the faffing about every year with Hayes. |
