News reports and 'sources': typical of Goa isnt it?. Nothing is ever straight and true in Goa no matter how qualified the source or report is. As for which fingers the advocate has lost, one can hope that he will be able to make the Victory sign, in reverse once he recovers.
My sincere advice: dont give up on Goa. If folks like you do give up, the demise of "A Goa" will be hastened. The local Goans seem to know it.
Wheatsheaf it is o.k. you saying that - we are 20 year visitors with a Villa, but her in doors, is getting afraid to return - although we should be there next week. It is people like London Tom, preston john, someother stupid man and Milward that are scaring the ladies. My wife was happy to walk from one end of Candolim to the other in the dark for many years on her own (shopping of course) which she would never have done at home. Now she is very nervous.
These so called Indians are themselves scaring FN's from going to Goa, are they just two week riff raff - or do they stay 6 months like the rest of us.
How safe I was asked by my wife will it be for the children and grandchildren whom we bought the place for the enjoy the Goa we had known for so many years.
Every day you read of people being down the well, murdered etc. etc. what is going on out there. If you can't believe their own newspapers who do you believe - you can't believe the governers, councillors etc.

With your 20 years of Goa, you are more Goan than most people currently in Goa. Dont let them push you out. You will see once you are back, that the real Goans from your area know you and know about you and will keep an eye out for you too. Bear in mind that local Goan girls/ladies do not walk out alone after certain hours, and local Goans also keep their guard up after dark simply because circumstances have changed dramatically with the railway pouring shysters into Goa stations. In 20 years you have almost certainly developed the instinctive health and safety mindset practised by Goans themselves. We have to acknowledge and mourn the loss of the Goa we once had the joy of knowing...gone forever are the carefree breezy days but there's some of the beauty that took us there in the first place. This too will disappear, but not just yet. Save the grandkids future heartache by not letting them get attached to Goa since you can see the beginnings of the degeneration now.

I like Old Mans OH would walk everywhere but today in Goa that is very hard to do without watching your back constantly in the evening, I have a30 year old male friend who came back from a bar in calangute to candolim at 1am the taxi dropped him off near his house as there is no road access to it, a car stop and a guy asked him for a light, of which he gladly gave, with that 4 guys jumped from the car and beat him badly, they keep saying to him wheres your money, you must have money your white!!!! they took his mobile and continued beating him.
When they had finished he hid in a bush for sometime and a young nepalise guy helped him into his security box and then phoned his family, his mum has lived here for 8 years.
He was not drunk, but he said his attackers smelt of drink and seem to be getting a big kick out of beating a white guy.

One girlfriend had her bag snatched in Candolim by a guy on a bike, so keep your handbags on the inside, and do not use sparkley ones in the night.
Must admit I had a silver bag and two taxi drivers told me to leave it at home as it was attracting trouble. Some good guys there

as with any developing country goa has its problems, any goans that we have met have been really nice people. the people coming in to goa to do the scams are not and perhaps the odd goan.
have you read your own daily newspapers recently, there is corruption, bribing, murder, attacks etc. all over.
we have been stopped on our scooter and asked for a bribe or a fine, we were in the wrong, we negotiated and paid, its just the way stuff is done.
scarelt, the poor girl that got murdered, i still hold her mother responsible totally along with the people that killed her accidently or not. perhaps it was a cover up or perhaps it was just the goan way.
we are adding to goa's problems by buying property over the and going as tourists, what do you do in goa to reduce your carbon/financial/personal footprint and do you do anything postive for the goans when you are there.
i know when we go for longer i am going t help out at a childrens home, possibly the one for 'fallen women' and the animal sanctuary but cant quite face the rabies vaccination at the moment.

Do you think there might some similarity between the Scarlett and Bennett murders.
A drug deal gone sour and involvement of a minister's son ?

I'm sure you will find that most of the Brits do what they can when in Goa, you try to dispose of your rubbish properly but you can't make the Goans do the same, I have never seen a Brit throw rubbish in the river but have seen the Goans do it. Most will have a shopping bag and refuse plastic bags. unfortunately Goa cannot provide safe drinking water so it is necessary to either have a filter or buy plastic bottles, If you buy a 5 litre bottle it can be returned to the shop, so I think to generalise and ask what we do to help is bit unfair of you.
Of course things are not great in the UK but the problems there cannot be compared to Goa and if you had been stopped on your moped in the UK after doing something wrong you wouldn't dream of trying to bribe the police, it is unacceptable. If a murder had been covered up you would be outraged so why are you not outraged at that behaviour in Goa.
I think it's safe to say we have all felt like you at some point, Goa is great the Goans are lovely and shocked to hear of anyone badmouthing the place, right now you are still in the throws of passion with the place but in time I should imagine you will have a change of heart as a lot of us have, until then enoy!

well said!!
i believe the law an order situation is rapidly deteriorating and for that reason do not feel safe there. this is very sad to me as i have spent 24 seasons there!
how preston john can come out with his obscene comments about the Scarlett Keeling case for me is unbelievable. i was very involved in the case and believe u me, when you actually know all the details ,(as Michael Mannion was not the only british witness in this case), he should hang his head in shame! the cops would have been delighted to pin this on one of the brits who were in that bar. this was a british teenager for gods sake and they were desperate to cover it up. now there is another case of rape with the german girl. wake up, goa is no longer the paradise it was. the goons are taking over.

Bang to rights every word you have written I agree with.If we were not tied into a property in Goa we wouldn't visit at all.I have seen the changes over the last few years and in my opinion it is getting ugly.We and a lot of other Brits have done for Goa what they wouldn't do for themselves. We do everything to try and preserve the environment which is more than the Goans themselves do.
Most Brits give to orphanages, the starving kids on the streets,I have seen Goans kick a hungry kid for begging.
No one deserved to die the way young Scarlet did,It was a cover up from the start.Neither did the young German girl,a minor can I add deserve to be raped by the minsters son.The whole Government is corrupt. It will be a good job when central Government step in because this is the only way law and order, the infrastructure and the corruption will get sorted.I am not saying that Britain is perfect but it is nothing like Goa.You cannot compare Britain to Goa in the same sentence with regards to what is going on out their

last season i went to visit my goan friend of the last 24 yrs who i met when he was 16yrs old. he is now a prominent, wealthy, uncorrupt ( there are some!) businessman. we discussed the law and order situation and he was very worried about what was happening there. what shocked me the most was when he said he was thinking to move to the UK as he was worried for his families safety as the goons were getting into every level. when u are living in a country like India, u have to be realistic. there is no police force and the wealthy youth know that. they are out of control.
