Hi all,
I still must say that I can't really understand why people of Indian origon are so defensive about their country. I do love my Goan friends and know they have enhanced my life. I cant say India/ Goa is wonderfull not because I am racist but becase I see how people live its not good, and PIO status people should at least ,as do many ex pats, work towards enabling the poor and repressed,.Finally racism is wrong, I dont like the comments (very few) that are racist, still there is no racism in exposing the inequalities in India. I honestly want there to be constructive criticism of India , How can they grow with half the work force kept behind closed doors.
Hoping for a better future , r

One point I would argue with is your apparent ( apologies if I am wrong ) assumption that those with Indian connections do not have the same urge to help the poor as you yourself. How can you possibly know what PIO/ NRI/ or spouses do or do not do?? Unless you devote your life to social work it is only possible to help in the area in which you live and have experience. and whatever help one family can give will not be obvious to others.

I agree ruskin that constructive criticism of the inequalities in India is essential but it is natural that those connected in some way with India will be defensive. After all in many ways India has made tremendous strides in a mere 60 years of independence, none of the terrible famines and inequalities of the British time. The present help for the very poor is far, far too slow and corruption and abuse of power continues at an ever faster rate.

I did not actually say that PIOs NRIs etc do not care about the poor in India. I was stating a view that identifying things that are wrong in India is not being negative. I actually believe that not confronting issues of inequality is negative. These issues should be raised wherever they happen in the world.
You make assumptions about me and my connection with India that are quite simplistic. I have not said at any time that I have more of an urge to help the poor than anyone else. I don't remember either suggesting that the British Raj was great.
I hope that clarifies things, r

Welcome to BE. As a Goan perhaps you could expand upon your comment a bit more. It is certainly a very interesting comment from you and I for one would be interested in why you have this view of your countryfolk
Nice to have you aboard
