NEWTONS BEWARE
#1
I appreciate we are pretty much all aware of the scams and deceptions that meet all customers of Newtons Supermarket, Candolim, but I feel compelled to describe events I witnessed there a few days ago.
Two European women were being served at the checkout, and had purchased a large box full of goods, including many bottls of spirits, totalling almost 5000 rupees. The final items to be rung through were about 7 - 8 Cadbury Flake bars. One of these was found to have a tear in the wrapper and one of the women asked for it to be changed to a non torn one. The staff then accused her of opening the wrapper ! After some exchange of verbals, the two women left without buying anything. Several of us in the same queue applauded the two women for taking this stance !
A woman in front of me who has a small child then told me that she has purchased baby food in jars, and found that the USE BY DATES had been covered with stickers bearing new dates - and the food was actually well out of date. HOW DANGEROUS IS THIS?!!!!
I mentioned this to a local friend and was told that they do the same practice with dairy foods, in particular YOGHURTS.
BEWARE - CHECK THE USE BY DATES ON EVERYTHING YOU PURCHASE AT NEWTONS SUPERMARKET
On a further note, they tried yet again to give me sweets for change to which I insisted on coinage. A member of staff then disappeared only to return with a large bag containing at least 500 x 1 rupee coins - Yet the tills were full of sweets - clear proof that even when they have change on the premises they still cheat customers with the sweets trick.
Quite frankly, the proprieters of these premises are criminals who should be prosecuted.
Dread - raising awareness

The stores relabel meat here in the US and put a new sell by date on it. There was an article about it on the news a while ago...in some states it's perfectly legal to do so.

Nice to see you in Goa - if only in the cyber sense !
I am quite surprised at this practice being legal in the US - what is the world coming to !!!

I know...surprising eh? What's the point of sell by dates when you can change them?

Thanks for the postings, girls - I'm going to be a bit more vigilant now about sell-by dates.
I'm not so fussed about canned or packet goods, but DAIRY produce - that's SCARY!
I often wondered why I would occasionally see blocks of AMUL butter out of the carton & sold just with the paper wrap & a sticky pricetag!

Wonder if they except sweets for payment of goods too???? Can just imagine the girls face when she rings up the bill and somebody pours a load of cheap horrible sweets on the checkout!
I can not stand the way they give out plastic bags as if the environment cant just make them magically disappear. Most things seem stupidly over priced and yet it still very busy....

And yet we have allowed the great God Tesco take over in the UK. Hand on heart, how many of you only use local shops at home. And how many never use a plastic bag when your shopping is to big to be accommodated in your carefully preserved recyclable bags?

Yes Newtons is overpriced and busy because people do not care what they spend when they are on holiday.
Foreigners come to Goa with, say, one thousand pounds Sterling and that is what they have to spend and they will spend it at what long termers think of as over priced Newtons, over priced Restaurants, the Shacks and Taxis. With Spirits at less than two pounds a bottle does it matter if they pay three pounds for a piece of cheese when this will still be less than Asda price. They compare Goan prices with prices at home and if they are the same or less than home they will buy whatever it is.
Winter stayers know almost what they should be paying but holiday makers don't and most could not care less as long as they have a good holiday.
When any of you go on Holiday in UK or Tenerife do you walk a couple of hundred mtrs to save a few pennies - I don't think so. (or maybe I am wrong)

I really don't know whats the problem with the skinflints on here that keep moaning about Newtons. It's the best thing that happened to Calangute/Candolim,you can get all you want under one roof, perfect. So what if it costs a few more rupees,if your skinT or hard up don't go on holiday.
Would you all rather trudge round all those crappy streets having to go to differnet stores to get your shopping...well if you want to save a few rupees off you go.
As for the sell by date thats out of order....but did you know Newton has just about paid off the bank loan he had for that pleace so he can't be that stupid. I'm sorry but your all skinflints when on holiday in Goa. BYE.

just to clarify my post, I live in Goa, not on holiday so maybe I look at things differently, especially issues concerning use of plastic, of course we all need and use it. They give out plastic bags for single items which is just ridiculous when there is a massive problem of the disposal of not only plastic but all waste in Goa. If you are on holiday you may not consider where all those empty bottle of water go or all those plastic bags you throw in the bin. Many places in India as well as Goa are trying to go plastic free. The Nilgiris is an example, you cant get a plastic bag for love nor money. They dont want their cows eating plastic or have it all over the countryside, they cant dispose of it and it doesnt easily decompose. They enforce the rule and it works. My overpriced comment was just that, they mark things up that are made in India over the MRP. I am certainly not going to crib about being able to get foreign products and having to pay for that privilege. In the monsoon they carry much less stock and most of the freezer section closes down. No one is forced to shop at Newtons there are lots of options...

Exactly! The majority of "long term" holidaymakers who come to Goa are only happy when they are moaning about somthing! If it's not about a sweet in Newtons it's a bottle of "Kings" going up by 5 ruppes in the local bar!.
