Bear in mind that when he said that it was as near to being a single country as it has ever been before or since (and yes, I do know it was still nominally nearly 50% Princely States).

I think it was when you said you were using the 'East is East' film to teach your grandchildren about India and polygamy.
Did you ever watch Lagaan?

As Winston Churchill rather astutely said "India is not a country it is a geographical feature, like the equator".

As elsewhere people have loyalty to their village, town, state and country. The few Indian people I have met seem to be proud to be 'Indian';
(especially as regards cricket!!

Does mention a 'Specific' threat to Goa, but not widely reported for some reason http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...w/10995257.cms

What is wrong with our judicial system
Muslim girl gang who kicked young woman in the head while yelling 'kill the white slag' escape jail after judge hears 'they weren't used to drinking because of their religion'
Yobs ripped lump of hair from Rhea Page's head during High Street attack
Three sisters and cousin escape with six-month suspended sentences
Maximum term for assault occasioning actual bodily harm is five years' jail
Judge: 'Those who knock someone to the floor and kick them in the head can expect to go inside, but I'm going to suspend the sentence'

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
I hold no particular brief for the old sot, but his attitude to India was based on more extensive travel and real life experience of the world than most of us will ever know. He was, like another unfashionable and much maligned contemporary of his Rudyard Kipling, an honest realist in his attitude to India. His comment, that he liked Mr. Gandhi very much better now that he has condemned untouchability, showed some humility as well as brutal honesty. After the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, when the Colonel Blimps of British India were raising a subscription for General Dyer, Churchill made a devastating speech in the House of Lords condemning the man and the action - if you really want an insight into his attitude to India you should Google for that speech.

I was thinking more of his opposition to independence and Gandhi. Recently published cabinet papers show that he favoured letting Gandhi die.
Also the terrible famines.

I always thought that Kipling was misunderstood. (personal opinion).
