Surely I am not the only one who emigrates for an adventure, amongst other things? There are a hundred different reasons people want to move to Canada or Oz or NZ. The first time we came to Oz for adventure and sunshine, the 2nd time for lifestyle that we couldn't replicate in Scotland, and we are planning on heading to Canada for career experience for me. Plus we are excited about the scenery and lifestyle opportunities there. Yes, we could take a holiday instead. But with 4 kids a holiday is barely any less expensive than moving somewhere for a few years and working. Why this assumption that people who emigrate are escaping something grim? Sometimes people are going to find something good rather than leaving something bad.

My point was, not everyone who comes to Canada, is on their uppers, trying to make a better life, because they think the UK has gone to the dogs. We dont all come with loose change in our purse thinking its the promised land, which in my opinion its not. The grass isnt greener, its just a different shade. Some of us are here because we have to be for a period of time.

There will, of course, always be some oddball immigrants who, unlike the star of The Last King of Scotland, don't see Canada and give the globe another twirl. I don't suppose there are enough of them for them to be a policy concern. Poverty and immigration have been closely coupled for centuries and are closely coupled today. The OP is the typical immigrant.

I haven't once said that was the case. For a start, few immigrants come from the UK, I suppose people moving from other countries might think the UK has gone to the dogs but I don't imagine that's a major consideration for people for moving from, say, China to Canada. My assertion was that most immigrants are in a bad way financially at home and seek to improve their lot even at the cost of having to move to Canada. Therefore the idea that immigrants should turn up with lots of money is a bit silly. People who have lots of money don't have to go to Canada.

I dont speak for anyone else, but I came here because it the move offered me a lot better pay than I was getting in the UK...

Mine was only comparable due to the fact that mortgage outlay was less, so disposable income in the end was more. Salary was lower.

No worried about the banter it's no problem. I'm happy to hear any suggestions if they might stop me getting on that plane.
To reiterate, dh can only work for one company and they lied to us and asked my husband to drive something his license didn't cover and they knew it. He refused and politely told them he couldn't work there any more.
He has another job lined up, and I'm still now searching for any work anywhere local enough that I don't waste all the wages in fuel. Doing anything but there's nothing -or that's what I'm being told when I go in there anyway.

Sorry to hear your story! We were in the same situation 4 yrs back. What does your husband do exactly? I may have a solution for him....I just found your post and I maybe too late.. I will post few more times so you can p.m. to discuss.

Well im afraid DBD is a bit right when he says folk come to Canada from poor backgrounds.
1. OH works in a hotel in Scarborough that is mostly occupied by new Hungarian gypo imigrants, they stay there usually till an apartment is located.
2. We had lotsa friends in the Philipines by family links. Wife brother married into a big philipino family. They all, but mum and dad, now live in Canada.
For some coming to Canada is soooo easy and lucrative. For others, its bloomin hard and exspensive.
