My sister use to live in Four Marks, Alton and many years ago the school banned running in the playground.......perhaps they should rename it the ' boredground '

World gone mad (in my little opinion) :)

Am I alone in thinking these sorts of things are incredibly stupid

On the contrary - it's overuse of such things and being too 'superclean' that got us into the 'superbug' problem in the first place ;)

Its the little things like that that make my life here a joy.

I'd say a definite no.
Most UK postmen carry British coins, so the chance of finding a postie with a Canadian 10c coin in his pocket would be practically zero.

Quite. More people should be aware of this. Childhood asthma is one outcome, for example. (Of too much "cleanliness")

I love this thread even if it did get a bit sidetracked, I love that penny box thingey i always put a penny in there.

I find that things here wouldnt happen in the UK, for instance a freind I know goes to Tim Hortons every morning through the drive through. one morning the person in the car in front bought the person behind there coffee, it was her and she did it back to the person behind her and a chain went back and back as everyone bought the person behind a coffee.

How did they all know what the others wanted? Telepathy?

In the Uk there is a small bridge that we used to cross that cost 20p to cross. Occasionally someone would pay for the person behind, just to make them smile. A toot and a wave was always appreciated.

So these things do go on in other countries too! I guess you just have to be in the right place at the right time!

Warburton Bridge between Manchester - Warrington by any chance ??

On the similar car theme in Blighty, most people pass on parking tickets with valid time left on and the I've seen the penny tray thingy in a lot of garages.

No Lincolnshire. But I guess there must be a lot of small bridges like that around.

Yes most people do pass on parking tickets although you are not supposed to. But I don't see the harm in it. A nice gesture to bring a smile to someones face.

That's true although the b@@st@rd councils now get around that be having you key in the numbers from your reg plate so they are printed on the ticket. Nothing squeezing the last pound out eh?!

My would this happen in UK story is of, on more than one occasion, leaving my keys in the front door (or the missus doing so) overnight. On a terraced street in the centre of an Essex market town! And not getting burgled!

I do lament the growth of political correctness over common sense and obsessive fear of liability. For example the Prom park in Maldon has a 60 year old public swimming lake thats now an ornamental pond 'cos some pissed up fool dove in hit his head and died. So in a triumph of the liability culture over darwinism all that history and a free to use facility disappears.

In these parts of Canada at least things are'nt yet to that stage. It is a creeping insidious (sp) thing though and I suspect the same the world over.

Ah but you can fool them coz a lot of the machines are only set up to take the numbers - so you can just put in 05 or 06 or whatever!! :D :D

They absolutely are in Toronto. For years I participated in a Wednesday night pick up game of football, completely informal, bags for goalposts, school yard stuff. Eventually the police came and broke it up and I was fined $52 for playing with a ball in park without a permit. (I added the ticket to my collection of Canadiana along with the ones for "wine with picnic" and "allowing small children to paddle in lake, no permit"). I then got into a correspondence with Parks and Rec over what is allowed in the park and it turns out that technically no form of exercise is allowed unless it's part of a formal league which has liability insurance. This is in consequence of the city being sued after someone bicycled off a cliff where there was no sign saying not to do so.

The correspondence was long and some of my examples bizarre but one that did interest me was sex in cars. Apparently that's ok with Parks and Rec so long as no one puts a foot on the ground for leverage, it may not be ok with the police but the city has no position on obscenity.
