OK, my ebay sax arrived at work today. $22.66 owing in duty/ handling.

I had $22.56 in my pocket. Posty pulled out his own change, gave me 10c, said, "dont worry about it."

Its the little things like that that make my life here a joy.

nice to hear and yes similar does happen in the uk ...just last month when my usc hubs was checking out of a chemist in a little surrey village and asked where the nearest place to buy a stamp was the pharmacist reached in his wallet and gave him a stamp....i love these little stories, restores the faith in mankind

Canadians are very laid back about small coins, I find. I guess it comes from the prices not having tax included so you never know the price until the till rings it up and then just hand over a note. Consequently everyone walks around with half a kilo of shrapnel. They are also very lax over the currency, accepting US coins in lieu of Canadian ones. Whatever works..

Gathering all that change can be good too. We don't walk around with it but chuck it in a box. A few weeks back I rolled what we had collected over the last two years. There was more than $1,200.

Haven't got any example but for me I would say no as the average person here doesn't speak to each other if they don't have to. I have 16 people in my stair I only know two of them and the rest don't want to talk, unless it's moaning.

After my first trip to Canada I came back extolling the virtues of Subway and the penny tray.

The UK caught on to Subway but I don't know if the penny tray will ever catch on here.

Some English shops have refused my Scottish money, and have many people with that same experience. Has it ever happened the other way round up here in Scotland?

The thing is, I never voted for this crap. No politician said "vote for us and we'll crush the life out of society with icky picky rules and make the police focus on stupid shit." Where is it all coming from?

Yes, in general it comes from New Labour and the army of people with nothing better to do than complain about the word "niggardly" or that "server/client software is racist and oppressive terminology". But why do the 99.99% of the population who aren't deranged put up with this crap?

So, instead, they're paying contractors probably thousands of pounds to strip the trees of conkers.

I lived in Worthing. The local school had already banned "conker-fights" as the kiddies got bruised hands/wrists!

One thing (experience talking ) about conkers you knock down by hurling missiles into the tree, is that they are often not quite ripe, so don't make good fighting conkers anyway!

If the council get all the conkers left on the ground though, all it means is that one enterprising individual is likely to collect the whole bally lot and sell them!!

I do think it is best for the tree and for fairness if you are only allowed to pick 'em up from the ground.

... btw, if you are in the area..... the very best conker tree is up in the field opposite Findon Parish Church. You have to climb over the fence and watch out for cow pats though! And those on the ground are quickly gnawed by rodents though, so you have to be prompt!

I also met two of my old teachers when I took my son to High school before he started there this term and I just asked if they still had the end of year cricket match of 5th and 6th formers against the staff and you know what they said "We're afraid that was banned around 6 years ago on insurance grounds, the education dept says its too dangerous and someone might get hurt" Oh yeah, maybe so but most things in life have some risk don't they ?
Has the country gone mad over Health and Safety, the hospitals and Nursing homes aren't allowed to use bleach either, no wonder there's that MRSA rife in our hospitals now as germs don't get killed off properly.

Am I alone in thinking these sorts of things are incredibly stupid
