The general consensus on winter tires is they are nice to have, but if you dont have the money you can still get around...just dont expect to stop in a hurry. The Wiki has the bases covered so I wont bore you all again now.

February will mark my 10th anniversary in Canada, and I finaly got winter tires this fall. Its like night and day. I drove in with no drama at all this morning once I finally chisseled the car out of the ice. Quite boring really, I cant even get the back end to fishtail when I floor it going around corners now:(

You said you weren't going to bore us.

Still in canada that way..no PST or duty that way and competitive prices, especially if including steel rims.

Tiretrends was about $5 more expensive for me and I figure that Nevada ain't that much more of shipping distance than Vancouver for me!;)

Thanks Iaink, at least I know what I've got now instead of guessing. It's not me I'm worried about it's my wife when she gets here later in the month. I'll be worried sick everytime she went out.

Good site. I'd get a set if I could afford them - maybe next year?

On a related note: I have local friends here who have winter tyres and they seem to believe that they make them nigh on invincible whilst driving. I suspect that even with 4 sticky wheels, driving so close to the car in front that they cannot see your headlights would result in a large bang if sudden braking was necessary?

At least Tiretrends is keeping the money within the canadian economy.

If buying from the US make sure you know what the shipping, tax, duty and brokerage costs are going to add up to first. Tirerack has a handy calculator before you check out....the duty and brokerage were enough to have me rethink my plan:)

Quite. Winter tires are not a substitute for proceeding with caution.

Additionally, when I slam the brakes on , it increases the chances of getting hit from behind, especially if that car is on all-seasons...but I'd rather take my chances on being hit from behind that being in a head on frontal collision.

Cheers for the tiretrends and tirerack links, there's no need to have an argument over it:)

I'll check out both sites and act accordingly. But to keep the peace I won't say who I chose.

I try not to use the brakes in winter, I go down the box and brake only when I'm already at a crawl and want to stop completely. I think I'm much less likely to skid as the result of a gear change than from applying the brakes.

Remember, you dont need to replace them with the same size. Its always cheaper to go for a smaller diameter wheel and a higher profile tire, assuming you are going to get a second set of wheels to mount the tires on.

I guess I'm repeating whats in the winter driving wiki again...

Ah - but you're using a good old fashioned manual aren't you?

I'd much prefer one of them in this weather.

If you think they're bad you should see some after they put on winter tires with studs in them.:eek::eek:

My father in law was one of them. ;)

True, but no-one ever used engine breaking to avoid the suicidal deer we have around here, and most North American vehicles have automatics which dont offer a lot in engine breaking anyway.

You have more faith in the driver behind paying attention to what you are doing than I do too:)

Some of the winter drivers here really frighten me. I mean I can drive carefully all I want and be sensible yet they seem to think overtaking at high speeds in whiteout conditions is acceptable and then drive right up your bumper as an added thrill.

Again, we should be given the option of shooting said idiots as part of some "winter safety driving law'

Too severe - Mmmm?
