I have no idea. They don't have 'snow tires' written on them but then they don't have 'all season tires' either. How does one tell by looking at them? Any markings?

If you have bits of 'pedestrian' wedged into the treads, you likely still have summer tires on.

Go on, explain...or are you referring to the pies?

No, I'm referring to walking on ice and staying vertical.

Long strides = a trip to casualty.

Short strides = a fighting chance of not doing a face-plant.

Once you get the hang of it, you can walk quite fast. You just look a bit like John Inman.

Wait until we've had a decent bit of freezing rain/drizzle/fog. You will learn to mince.

Short strides allow you to keep your centre of gravity over your feet and exert maximal vertical force and minimal horizontal force, the latter force being what can send your feet sliding out from under you.

I did not grow up in snow/ice so learned the hard way during winter trips to Canada.

AAAAHHHH... I did think that was a possible meaning but was afraid of the kickback of being labelled a homophobic. You have to be very careful with terminology on here.

Hold up, while I look for signs of winter tires etched into the rubber I'll check for pedestrian remains. Be right back.
Then I must get and do some work.

Rather a tricky drive this morning. Snow squall warning, high wind warning, I was very glad not to be a SUV or anything else with flat sides. As it was I could see nothing at all for the first couple of miles and ran a stop sign thinking it was still a fair way off. There are some winter driving pictures on the blog but they're from last week, that looks balmy now.

Ok here's a photo, not very good.
I'm 99.9 percent certain they're summer tires. There are the words "Traction A". But meaningless to me.

I must have survived this morning on long term driving experience combined with luck.

Did you have the top up or down?

OK, OK, call me a wimp, I had it up. I was out on the tractor most of the weekend though, that was enough wind in the not-quite-hair.

Goodyear integritys...all seasons.

The general consensus on winter tires is they are nice to have, but if you dont have the money you can still get around...just dont expect to stop in a hurry. The Wiki has the bases covered so I wont bore you all again now.

February will mark my 10th anniversary in Canada, and I finaly got winter tires this fall. (MrsK has had them for a few years on the kidmobile) Its like night and day. I drove in with no drama at all this morning once I finally chisseled the car out of the ice. Quite boring really, I cant even get the back end to fishtail when I floor it going around corners now:(

You knew where I was headed with that one then.;) I noted the stuck tractor pics on the blog. A little embarrasing eh? You need a bloody great winch on the back for that eventuality.

Steve,

Go to www.tirerack.com, feed in your vehicle details and get some good prices on winter tires. Compare with your local tire places and buy where is cheapest. I'm shipping 4 tires from Nevada to Newfoundland and still paying less than I would here!

Or www.tiretrends.com

Still in canada that way..no PST, brokerage fees or duty that way and competitive prices, especially if including steel rims.

Well yes, fortunately I don't think anyone saw. Earlier in the day I'd come close to rolling sideways down the hill which would have been even worse, I don't want to be seen dead on a tractor. I need chains.
