Hi,
Any advice as to (a) what I need to apply for, visa/permit-wise and (b) what the tax implications are for my situation, would be very much appreciated.
My situation is as follows:
Any advice as to (a) what I need to apply for, visa/permit-wise and (b) what the tax implications are for my situation, would be very much appreciated.
My situation is as follows:
- My wife is an NHS surgeon and is moving to Canada for 1 year (1 July 2022 - 30 June 2023) as part of a clinical fellowship training programme.
- Although they have not yet been granted, she has already applied for her visa/work permits (she has not included me in any of her paperwork, since I have not yet received clearance from my employer that I can leave).
- I am a lawyer for a firm headquartered in the UK, which does not have any offices in Canada.
- I would like to continue to work for the firm that I work for remotely, full-time.
- We own a property in the UK, which we will move back into upon our return.

I realize this is not an answer to any of your questions but are you going to Toronto? I ask because one of my daughters took up with a surgeon who was here for a year (later extended to two) as part of a clinical fellowship training programme. It would amuse me if it were the same position.

2. Although it is really moot question, as the spouse of foreign worker in NOC O, A or B, you could get an open spousal work permit on entry to Canada.

Thanks for your help - am I correct in thinking that I therefore only need to apply for a visitor's visa?

Yes, except for some obscure cases, a tax treaty applies and one ultimately pays in one country or the other. A return has to be filed in the other country including taxes paid as a deduction.
