thanks to everyone for their comments!
i think i have less ties in this country. obviously im close to my family but i can see the points such as phones, webcams etc will not make it that hard. i think my other half thinks Canada is still in stone age and has not developed technology yet!
although it has taken nearly 18 months of daily nagging, i think she is coming round!

Hello, im currently serving within the Met Police, and im looking into transferring to either Calagary or Edmonton. Can anyone give me any tips or people to contact!!!

Also my other half is a teacher, and im wondering how easy it is to get into the Canadian educational system...

My god, I looked at the Edmonton 8 stages of application......is it as bad as it looks...

Hi Lamby,

A very warm welcome to BE.

There's a whole police forum on here which sounds like the place to spend an hour or two...
http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=79

As a general starting point, a good old tour of the WIKI will serve you well...
http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Category:Canada

Teaching appears a tough nut to crack...
http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Teaching_in_Canada

Also, if you go to this search screen...
http://britishexpats.com/forum/search.php
...and on the top left Key Words box, type in things like "Teacher" "Teaching" "qualify" "become" and then click on the Canada forum on the right (ensure there is a tick in the box beneath re including child forums) and then click on "Search Now", it will pull up some hopefully relevant past threads.

For an indication of life (as we experience it) in and around Calgary, southern Alberta and the Rockies, feel free to have a good look around on our blog (link in the signature line below). No coverage of Edmonton yet we're afraid.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.

Hi new to this as well, family of 5+1 dog.worked in the machining industry back in the UK but as with this move the whole change thing would like a career change to but to what i don't know.we are finding that we are chasing our tails as where to live (not inner city people,Canmore Fantastic example of a place would love to live in) and getting employment, love the outdoors.Had job offer in Kelowna but didn't like the place !.this may seem like we have not really taken this seriously but far from it,any help, info or job offers in the Canmore area would be Great ha ha thanks.Calgary would be great too, its hard because you need a job first then find a house to live . my wife was a karate instructor in the UK,not a easy job to find here but can do her own classes for young children. it would be great to fit in and settle and get the children into school asap.in the UK me and my wife built our own extension .which was great but hard work so i know i can put my hands to anything and not afraid of hard work.just need a chance for our new life in Canada.
live the dream

6 months is about right, I remember driving into Calgary one early morning for a test with the sun just coming up over the horizon reflecting a red/orange colour on the tall glass buildings, clear blue sky with all the city light looked awesome, like out of a movie, not quite as good as manchester on a rainy grey morning along deansgate..... yeah right !

Hello Paul

We have just found this expat site and thought we'd say Hi as we moved to Calgary in January this year.

We've had some ups and downs that we're still trying to sort out and because of this haven't settled in yet, not sure that we will but have realised there can be lots of opportunity here if everything falls into place.

The summer here has been lovely, with September being really warm too.

Hope you enjoy it when you get here.

Jay and Steve

Hi Jay & Steve,

Welcome to BE from just down the road in Okotoks. We've had some ups and downs too (missing family and friends) but it all seems to be coming together for us as we go along. Hope it will for you guys too.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.

Cheers Paul. Allowing family and friends back home to connect with our new life here was the original idea behind the blog - and it has proved a great success in this respect. It helps to reduce the feeling of distance when they have some appreciation of things we go on to email and IM and speak to them about. It's also served as a great visual diary for ourselves. We'd recommend doing a blog to anyone thinking of coming out here. Easy to do and free - a powerful combination.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.
