What are those little lights that flash red or amber on some junctions? I went thru one when there was no traffic about but the car behind stayed put. Did I do wrong??[/QUOTE]

use it as if it were a stop sign .

Until you see it from the air one cannot imagine that Ottawa (or odawa as everybody pronounces it here) would have so many private swimming pools. What do they do in the winter? Skate on them?

Oh, I can drive. I even have a recently purchased car. I'm just not legally allowed to.

(That sounds very mysterious and cool but, really, I stupidly let my BC drivers licence expire while living in England... I didn't drive there (England), legally... and just haven't bothered getting re-legal yet.)

Timbits aren't donuts in the real sense of the word... they are the bit from the middle. I use to hate Tim Hortons until I bought stock in it. Now I encourage everyone to go and stuff their face!

I like Oddawa...

nice comments, wincing as i related to several of mine. i believe, though bound to be proved wrong, the lights mean someone has just pressed the button for the lights to change, so prepare to stop.

Tut tut missy, you'll be burned at the steak. You do nod your head at capitalism when it suits you then

Must go to sleep, my mind is at 2.15 am tomorrow.
Might do some pics for tomorrow on a new thread.

I knew I did something wrong a few seconds after I drove off, thing is there were no pedestrians anywhere near the road. So who pressed what button?

might be a different type of sign mate, i have seen one which hangs, literally, by a thread over the road with a black cross on it that flashes, yet there are no crossing points and its not a junction or level crossing, sorry got me. i'll ask at work as i suppose i should know really.

Amber flashing light means be careful - usually at a crossroads junction where you're on the main road and there are two side roads (which will have STOP signs).

The red light is the one you'll see if approaching one of these junctions from one of the side roads.

Unsurprisingly it means STOP...

ok, I'll take a photo of one of them today if I see it, it'll make it easier because I'm having trouble describing it

There is no button, its just one of those rural things to indicate the intersection. Sometimes they are 4 way stop junctions (everyone sees the flashing red), but if one is a main road it has the right of way (the orange just warns you you might get sideswiped if the folks going the other way did what you did)

You might want to acquaint yourself with this...

Stop the Insanity.

They don't have those flashing lights in Manitoba - you needn't just worry about foreigners on your roads, worry about other Canadians too.

I learned the other day that funeral corteges don't stop at stop signs, they display an orange pennant which tells you this apparently. Is that bit of information in the Driver's Handbook (haven't read it) or something you're just supposed to know?
