Apparently you're not much of a history buff either
Charles Wreford Brown, first refered "Association Football" as soccer in 1890 in Oxford England.
Soccer Origin
The word soccer is derived from an abbreviation of association as in - Association Football. In 1890 it was spelt variously as socca and socker. One day Charles Wreford-Brown was leaving his digs, dressed in sporting togs, when his friend enquired ' where are you off?' I'm off to play football' Charles said.
'Association or Rugger' the friend asked. ' Why Soccer of course' , said Charles Wreford-Brown as jogged off to the game.
Bear in mind that in this era upper class sportsman had a fad of adding ' er' to everything. Rugby became rugger and socca became soccer.
So when in Rome please behave like the romans, it does save the rest of us from being tarred with the same brush.
Thank you.

I may live in Canada, but I am English and a Football fan and I will always refer to it as football as any real football fans do. Same as I wouldn`t say Fish & Fries, its Fish & Chips. Just because you move to a new country doesnt mean you forget where you come from and your heritage.

Blah Blah Blah yawn................yes I knew that, however it is called football, hence the Football Association, FIFA, UEFA, etc etc and not the Soccer Association, FISA, UESA.

But if you were looking for places to play and teams to play with I'm sure you wouldn't just look up "football." Being in Canada and all I'm sure you would have the nous to look up Soccer. Since that's how it's called in the Yellow Pages.

Of course you would, my point is that it maybe called soccer here and that petrol is gas the boot is the truck.........but we, as Brits, shouldn't forget what we call them, we just have to humour the locals when necessary

Good luck if you decide to live in France. Even though it's "le football" there.

Most of 'em can't understand a British accent easily anyway, so call it what you like!!!
Just watch out for the Croatian team if you play in Calgary: I hear they can be dirty bastards.
And they call it football too!
