We got a Pug earlier this year and it's ace. I also do many activities to keep me sane, fresh, and socialised during the week days:

Snowboarding, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Boxing, MMA training, walking the dog. I'm lucky in that i had a great family and friends network when i arrived but the stuff i do, especially the dog walking, has made me many more acquaintances. Plus he gets me up and about and helps me nap in the afternoon (Pug Blanket).

That said, don't get a dog if he's going to bugger off in 6 months. That wouldn't be fair on the dog.

Has he applied for the VPD?

I also find perving at the bikini clad women on the beach during summer is a nice way to pass the time. I have a pair of binoculars and Oink has a boat so...
Agree that dogs are ace and they force you out the house because they need walking every day.

So with all the activities you do during the week when do you find time to work?

You and Oink perving on the beach... ummm... speechless... the image is just wrong...

Well I just checked my condo and it sill looks small and expensive - especially with condo fees. I figure £300,000 would buy me a nice flat in the UK (outside of London) and probably be bigger.

This is the first place I owned in Canada which is currently for sale:

788 square feet. $609,000 which is £378,000!!!!

I completely agree with this. Spot on! Yes, I'm moving back to Canada with my husband, but we've been together for 18 years, and have never Lived in the UK together, and we are not going back, just yet, to BC, where he is from, in this way it will be a challenge and adventure, of the hopefully pleasurable sort, for both of us.

Hmmm, kits, that is likely thee most expensive area in Canada.

While it is nuts here, prices drop dramatically out of Vancouver proper...we paid a bit more for 2500 sq feet on the boarder of white rock and surrey. Depends where you are comparing to. Same on the north shore we had 1300 sq feet, views, 500 sq foot deck for 650 k. Only 20 mins from kits.

Sq foot to sq foot the values appear better....an average uk house is smaller than a town house here....think of your typical 3 bed semi....

Thanks for all your suggestions!! The good news is that he's had two interviews over the last 2 days. One of them has said yes, although it's working in cold storage place. But I think it'll make him feel worthy and will give him something to do, even if it is part time. it'll force him to get out of the house and interact with people.

He's applied to various police depts but it's a slow process. A few of them were pricks saying that he needs to live here for 2 years before they could consider him competative! That's a big blow to the ego of someone with all that experience...doesn't really help! so keeping our fingers crossed that something will come up in the New Year.

I think getting him out of the house as much as you can would be a good start.

In my work I see how hard being the partner of a depressed person can be and it's not to be underestimated the toll it takes on the partner.

Are you able to sit down with him and make an action plan on how to tackle what he is finding hard? with solutions and steps to get to the solutions? small tasks lists for each day can be very beneficial to people who are feeling very down.

Hope this helps a little
Thanks for that! I don't see the signs of depression. He does work out 5x a week and has a good diet and all that. He has some good days some not so good... but i am definately keeping an eye on it. Thankfully the weather has been fairly decent so we've been doing a lot of outdoor activities. In fact just came back from 3 days at Whistler.

Housing isn't an issue for us at the moment. I know I can get a 5 bedroom home in the suburbs outside of Vancouver with a large garden. Vancouver itself is overpriced and congested. Neither of us want to live in the city.
