Re: SEC assessment query for CRNBC
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, but found some of the stories interesting and wanted to share a little bit about our immigration process.
My wife and I are currently jumping through the various hoops that both the CRNBC and the Canadian High Commission put up ahead of our move in 2013. My wife is a registered nurse here in the UK with nearly 20 years experience, and she has specialised training in the areas of Haemotology and Oncology. She's been offered a job at VGH and we've successfully obtained an LMO (Labour market opinion). However, completing the CRNBC application is proving frustratingly less straight forward for us. My wife flew to Vancouver to take her SEC in October, and has been informed that she needs to complete 5 courses, 4 of whicf
h have to be undertaken before they will even allow her provisional licensing. We're committed to the move so have enrolled her on the 2 online courses in January and the two workshops in March. She is currently taking the nursing in Canada course, which will be completed by 14th December. We have put the cost of this on our credit cards, because our savings are set aside for one way flights (for 7 of us) and one months rent. We've been told by the assessor that the courses are important because they will be delivering information that will ultimately come up in the CRNE and that it's in my wifes interest not to beging work without it. We don't have a problem with this at all because obviously failure of the CRNE would have more significant implications for us in the long run.
The only problem is the knock on effect the CRNBC process is having on our visa application. My wife had undergone her medical successfully, but then came a request for a letter from CRNBC confirming our eligibility for provisional registration, with a warning that if it wasn't recieved within 30 days our visa applicaiton would be cancelled. We don't get official confirmation of this until after she's completed the final workshop on 22nd March. If the visa application is cancelled, then we may well lose the £700 we've invested (mine and my wife's open visa's and four study permits for our kids). This would obviously mean paying out again nearer the time. My wife's job at VGH starts on 1st April, and according to CRNBC registration will be processed within days of the final course being completed. If we haven't got our visa's by then however, it would also mean that my wife has to fly back to England and wait before we can move together. We are really hoping that the Visa department are reasonable and show some understanding regarding our situation, however, communication with them is like getting blood from a stone. In fact the only way is through a webform, which states that they may respond by e-mail at some point within 28 days, but may not.
Anyway, I hope someone out there finds this interesting and encouraging. If nothing else, consider SEC as the beginning of your journey to becoming CRNBC registered, rather than the final hurdle, which is the trap we probably fell into. It's a little bit catch 22, because the more specialised your training, the easier it appears to be to get a job and an LMO, but the more general your nursing training, the better equipped you are for CRNBC, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a hospital will be able to justify employing you ahead of a Canadian!
keep posting your stories!

Hello ,
I m new to this forum , so look forward to catching up with those of you who are experiencing similar scenarios related to becoming a registered nurse here in B.C
I have just received my results from my SEC Assessment. I to have been asked to complete a 250 hour clinical placement which I wish to appeal . I have worked in a clinical environment since qualifying in 1991 so I am hoping with references and a convincing letter of appeal that I may to win my case.
I would love to know how you constructed your letter of appeal and would appreciate any advice . I have only 25 days left to log my appeal so look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you

Re: SEC assessment query for CRNBC
Hello ,
Found it all quite a tough experience and glad I can now move forward following the results. I have to do a nursing in Canada course and Pharmacology course , both on line , which I feel will be of benefit for my development . The online courses are $500 plus the books they recommend you have . The clinical is $1000 plus you need to fulfill certain criteria before being accepted into the clinical setting which also has cost implications.
I am sure it will all be worth it and I am glad I am on to the next stage . My advice is to keep calm and stay on top of your nerves as I feel if I had not stirred myself into such a nervous state I would have performed better !
Good luck in May

Re: SEC assessment query for CRNBC
Hi again,
Overall the 5 courses: Pharmocology, Medical/Surgical, nursing in Canada, health risk assessement and psychomotor skills, cost us $2800. It is a hit we weren't particularly prepared for, but with my wife going straight to the top of the payscale at VGH, we can just about afford to lump it on a credit card.
Our visa's came through in the new year. It was enough in the end to convince the embassy that my wife was committed to completing the conditions that CRNBC set out after SEC. It seemed a daunting process at the time, but she's already completed 2 courses and is on course to complete the third before we fly on the 5th March. She then has two workshops to attend between 11th and 17th March. Upon completion we've been told that it will take 10 days to process provisional registration which means if all goes to plan, she'll be able to start work on 1st April as hoped.
We have young children, all boys, and this week is going to be manic, but exciting!!!
Dave

Thanks for that Dave. I've sent an email to all 6 health authorities in BC asking if there are any nursing shortages where a positive LMO is likely to be obtained. I'm just waiting out on that now.Good luck to you and your famiily.

Hiya,
I appealed. In my letter I stated my job and what that intailed. As I was a sister in emergency I had quite a list of skills and speciality type skills if that makes sense.
I also got 3 consultants, my matron, my clinical educater and a few junior doctors to write a letter of support.
It is worth it as I won!
Let me know if you need any help

Re: SEC assessment query for CRNBC
My situation is a bit different as I completed the SEC, the required 4 courses in 2 months. I wrote the CRNE and passed, but couldn't complete the 250 hours. I was having issues that prevented me from flying to BC. My file expired Feb., the 10th, and I've been told that I can update my file and paid the 560 CD. I didn't have any problem. However, two weeks ago, the 250 hours reference requirement has been cancelled. I think that logically my status should be converted into an RN (fully registered) since my file just expired.
I am afraid that I will go through the same process again. I filled out the update form and signed that I may been asked to go through the SEC again!!! Do you think I can appeal? Just to be fully registred??
Thanks and Good Luck to you ALL...
