School Kids
#1
Hi Guys,
I wonder if anyone can help,
I have two kids one age 9 and the other 12. The 12 year old should be starting high school here after the summer but we are hoping to move out to Alberta in October.
Could someone tell me what grades the two kids would need to attend in Alberta???

Hi, your 12 year old will start in grade 8, and your 9 year old will start in grade 4.
good luck with everything when you move.

Nine year old would be grade four or five, again depending on birthday and age in October.

If you're coming to Calgary, the central admissions office will interview and test your children, and recommend the grades in which they'll be placed initially.
It would help if you brought a couple of workbooks in core subjects like English and math(s), as they would give school officials an indication of the type of work your kids had been doing in the UK. It's not essential, but would be helpful if you could ask your kids' UK schools for their curricula during the year prior to their departure from the UK. This would provide Canadian school officials with a detailed list of what your kids had studied.
Once your kids are in school, they'll be monitored for a month to six weeks, to check if the initial grade placement was appropriate. If it was not, their classroom teachers will recommend that they be moved up or down a grade.
Quite a normal experience is the the British child is a year ahead of his/her Canadian age mates, from an academic point of view.
