Hi Guys,
I am going to moving to Calgary in Feb 09 with 2 friends and I was looking for some help, can we rent a property on a visit visa? Can we open bank accounts? Non of us have jobs we are going to find them when we arrive. We all hold UK Passports and we have had enough of Dubai........
Does anyone know what the job market is like in Calgary as Dubai is really bad......... companies closing left and right, I'm in real estate, but I am going to be snowboarding till the end of the season, but might look into property management, my two friends will look at admin work!
Any help would be great!!
Thanks
Nick

Job.... you need a sin#
Renting..... I would rent you a vacation place, but as a professional property manager, if I rent to you, what is to stop you leaving after 2 months even though you have signed a lease for 6 months, you could go back to Dubai and I would be out of a tenant.
You may need to do some more research.

Not yet, but we all hold UK passports, so we will be allowed to stay for 6 months before we have to leave and come back. To be honest we all turned up in Dubai 12 months ago on visit visa's then got work and then got 3 year work visa's.

Why don't you all get a BUNAC visa - allows you to work in Canada for a year, although think you have to be 30 or under - applications are open at the mo.

You'd have to find an employer who wanted to give you a job, then they'd have to apply for something called a LMO - to get one they'd have to prove to HRSDC that they'd advertised the job across Canada for 3 months and been unable to find a Canadian willing, or able, to do the job. Only then could you apply for a TWP (and the whole process can take 6 months, during which time you wouldn't be eligible for anything like health coverage, so you'd need enough money to support yourself for 6 months).
Your best bet if you are under 30, as Flossie and Jim suggested, is a Bunac visa.
Have a read of the following for more info on TWP's and what you'd have to do to get one........................http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Tempor...Permits-Canada
And the job hunting section of the Wiki may also be useful..............http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Catego...Hunting-Canada
Best of luck.

Hi there,
Not sure about everything else myself but as far as bank accounts go we opened an account on our recee trip back in September. We just walked into one of the branches of a bank that was recommended to us and told them we wanted to open an account. All they wanted was two bits of photo ID (passport and d/licence) and something with our UK address on (our paper driving licence) we told them we were planning on going out to live this year and wanted to do as many of the practicalities as we could before we arrived. Then when we got home we transferred some money over to the new account.
Hope this helps.

Get yourself on the CIC website and see if you are eligible before coming over...........or apply for Bunac, although I think the cut off point has been reached
Its not as easy as in the Middle East!

on a 6 month visitors visa you probably won't be able to find jobs, rent anywhere other an a holiday place etc.....
I would read some stuff in the FAQ on this site and apply properly before you come.

Its a lot harder to get a TWP here and you need to fall into certain skills shortage sectors to even qualify, then you have to find an employer willing to give you a job and apply for an LMO and then you have to apply for the TWP.

Hi Scott and welcome to the forum. You obviously haven't yet discovered the wonders of our Wiki (on blue bar at top of page) which has loads of useful info in it. If you'd put 'fast track' into the search it would have brought the following article up which hopefully explains it all.................http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Fast_T...ication-Canada
Hope that helps.
