Gas and explosive potential with a BBQ - tin of baked beans and burnt toast for me. Damn I wish I knew how to cook.

We think so... been here 11 years, first Ontario, then Nova Scotia. As long as you have a job things are just... easier... and less chaotic than some parts of the UK (for us East London, Suffolk, Edinburgh).
TV, pubs, sense of humour and architecture are hopeless though.

Yes, it's been a bit of a cross to bear, but some poor sod had to do it! Thank you for telling me I can get on ox tail Oink and PP. The supermarkets, butchers and markets here have been wonderful, and I don't think Canada will ever rival them. I do think there will be good compensations though...maybe a more svelt figure and a healthier liver? On the OP is it really much better - possibly and possibly not, but after about ten years anywhere I get bored, and I've been here daily for twelve and I'm climbing the walls.

We're not allowed BBQ's in my condo block.

For what its worth (not much probably!!), we are in a similar situation to the OP, been through these conversations a million times.
What we have basically concurred is that you cannot look at other people in either place. you can only look at your our personal situation. If you leave a good life (job, etc) and move anywhere in the world to a lesser life you will not be happy. You can only compare your current situation to your possible situation. End of. You can only look at other peoples circumstances for so long. There are happy and miserable people all over the world. Drives you crazy!!
We have asked about regarding cost of living and wages. Other than that we just focus on what it means to us. It is difficult as you want to discuss it with other people, but it just gets confusing listening to other peoples circumstances, which won't be yours.
I think the only real help would be to talk to people at the same stage as you.
(Told you it wasn't worth much.....).
