I bought a padded 3/4 length jacket from Mark's Workwear a couple of years ago and it's toasty!!! Was in a sale at about $50 so no complaints!! My other long winter coat is an Aigle which is a French brand and it's way too hot! lol

OP, having been here for a very long time, its something that just comes natural as it would living anywhere else.
- Nothing special, other than change to warmer clothing, change to winter foot wear, always wear a hat, scarf & gloves when outside, life goes on as it would during the non-winter months.
- Have the snow shovel shiny to the ready, stock up on salt for the step at the front door & immediate pathway. Be prepared to shovel twice even three times a day on some days
- Make sure your vehicle is winter ready & that you have booster cables & lots of windshield washer fluid in the back of the vehicle.
- Some folks plug their car block heaters in nightly
-Driving habits adjustment, takes a day or two, can take extra time to get from A to B
- Being older retired & not having to go to work, we frequent out less & only do this if we have to. The side walks can de dangerously slippy, easier to fall & break something.
- We don't do winter sports activities - its enough exercising walking from a parked car to the store & back
- If & when walking in the snow & slush, mind that vehicles will spray you with crap from the roads
- Be prepared for school closures
- Be prepared for power outages, suggest having a gas or wood burning fireplace as well as a gas stove (not electric) in the house, this way if the power goes out you wont freeze for a day or two.
- A back up generator is also a consideration

Re: Preparing for winter in Toronto
Bulbs planted- tick
Weeding- tick
Gutters- tick
Christmas lights on roof- tick
Air conditioning covered- tick
Boat winterized- tick
Basketball net moved- tick
Still to do..
Driveway markers
Hot tub half way through being drained and filled again.
Leaf blowing- fun for about f***** 20mins and now thoroughly hacked off with the amount of f***** trees we have!!
I will be really glad when the snow actually falls... Until we actually have to start shovelling of course. Why did I move here again

Re: Preparing for winter in Toronto
I have my fall checklist done.
Winterize car by putting in windsheild cleaner that is good to minus 40.
Put pots out front into storage.
AC units are in the closets.
That is about all that is needed to prep.
The leaves all go away without any effort on my part.

Oddball one- most paints and glues don't like freezing temps. If you're a typical Brit handyperson you might leave them in the shed through winter- they really need bringing inside.

At the risk of seeming organised, we did that; blow in foam, glue, stains all manner of stuff. Now the basement is properly ready to burst into flames.
