Good to see that there's no North/South divide in the quality of Schemies/Neds/Tinks.

Thanks Iain for the shop names... I think I've found my first clashing "almost" mumu

YUMMY! Wonder if they can make it wider and more garish?

The first three places you mentioned there, are a bit of OKish, anything further than that, and you end up in as you put it "MU-MU" land.
I can see why penningtons will be big in that area, the pictures on the website says it all, is that the kind of person you are? Oh yeah....you will get away with even a loin cloth there, that is considered HIP over there.
I have spoken to, and know many brits, lets just say east of TO is not where they all rush to. But then again....what do i know, apart from having a wife that grew up in Oshawa, and a brother inlaw who is an engineer station in kingston, and went to the RMC.
They wouldn't advice someone coming from the UK to live there to start with, and these are people that have lived in the UK and know the difference.

Now, all round Manchester there are whole families of scallies all walking around as though they've not only got something up their bum but also as though they're unable to pick their scabby knuckles off the floor, staggering along with spliffs behind their wingnut ears, bearing baseball caps tightened so much it leaves a mark on their thick skulls, gold-plate name tags and sovereign rings a-plenty with their tucked in tracky bottoms and expensive Nike trainers all chirping "Ere yaa dick'edd" whilst nicking sweets from the newsagents, drinking cans of Fosters on Market Street in the daytime, throwing fireworks at people "for fun" and SNAPPING THE *****ING AERIAL OFF MY CAR...

Scum - I hate them all!!!

We'll learn on the hop, as I'm sure a lot of people have to do.
Not everyone's as lucky as we are to have family to put up with us when we get there so I'm not going to knock free-ish digs.
I'm only *cough* 29, so I don't want to purposely stay in mu-mu land (I'll save that for when I'm 33 and a half), I will fight it as much as possible. For one.. I don't like hubbie with a full beard and slapheid - and tucked in check shirts make him look even shorter than he is, and I don't want to be calling my kids after inanimate objects or spell their names all funny like Showerheid or Tarmacdam.
Cheers!

Wendy,
You crack me up
I will say stay in Durham as you have a family there, but once you have settled down, you might want to move WEST of TO. Am west of TO, and the NERDY jobs as you put it, are all along the 401, and in Mississauga. I work in Mississauga, and am in the nerdy field myself.I live further west, but i can be in TO in 45mins flat. I will say consider Milton, Guelph, AND Cambridge, and from here, you are closer to TO. Am in my early 30s too, and don't think am ready for the boonies yet, or mu-mu dressing.
Actaully it was my birthday yesterday
My lovely wife took me to our joint, MILESTONES RESTUARANT. Very classy and sophisticated, you won't find mullets and LJ shirts in here

What's the story with the TO 'burbs? Is Scarborough like the Govan or Deptford of Toronto or what? Sounds like it's full of Canadian Chavs!
I've heard Mississauga is a bit snooty and full of penny millionaires?
Is that like the Putney of Toronto?
What about Brampton, York, North York, Etobicoke?
Ideally I want to be in the funky area with as few LJ's/Jesus Sandles as possible!

Brampton, York, North York, Etobicoke are all OK, and yes you might get some snooty van snoots there, but its on a smaller scale.
PLS, PLS, PLS avoid scarborough, unless you are ready to get shot. There has been at least 4 killings there in the past 2 months, and am talking execution style here.
I work in Misissauga, i won't exactly call it millionaires row, but some some of the biggest companies in the country are there: TOSHIBA, SONY, GE CAPITAL, ACCENTURE ( FORMERLY ANDERSON CONSULTING, i worked for them in london (uk) for a year after leaving UNI, before changing jobs, thank god for that ), RIM, SIEMENS...just to name a few.
The houses there are affordable, but i'll suggest moving a little bit west, to avoid the all this, and you can be in TO in an hour or less.
cheers

OK, I'll give Scarborough a miss!!
Just out of interest, where's that other dodgy bit, Jane/Finch?
Is that genuinely dangerous or just rough (i.e like most of Britain?)
I was given a tour of Gottingen Street which is Halifax's skid row last year. I didn't see anything wrong with it. In fact in Hull it would be considered a highly desirable area!!
I only saw one car on bricks the whole time I was there! At least five burnt out houses and 10 cars on bricks qualifies for a dodgy area in Leeds!
Anything less is a des-res!

You're indeed correct then in your assumption that comments are made by the likes of me, in the UK, but in my case it is with an informed reference point to use in my mockery.
For what it's worth, I generally wear jeans, a checked shirt (although it's always untucked) with a t-shirt underneath in colder months and boots - usually Timberland. Hey - I ain't no fashion victim!
Pah!!
Oh, hang on. Just realised that my jeans are ****...

Are you sure that you are really living in Canada?! The Leafs flag would be hanging above the beer fridge and the flag flying on the boat could only be the maple leaf! Man, are you getting it wrong. You will have to watch several more hours of Bob and Doug before you take your citizenship test....
