Hi thanks for your reply, will have a look at the YWCA. The assessment is at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Surrey Campus.

To get to Kwantlen College in Surrey you take the Sky Train (Expo line) to Scott Road then the 319 bus. It should take about an hour, but leave LOTS of time to spare because the last thing you want to do is arrive at an exam in a flurry.
You will not be travelling through the prettiest parts of the Lower Mainland, but hey ho.

Re: Nurses coming to Lower Mainland BC
Hey.
I've just got a job at Vancouver General Hospital in the emergency department (depending on visas and registration, etc) and was wondering where the best places to live within walking distance or public transport are near there.
Also I have to come over to Vancouver in December to do a SEC Assessment for my registration and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for decent but fairly cheap hotels preferably in the downtown area but near public transport links to get to Surrey (thats where I have to go for the assessment).
Thanks
Hannah

I've heard lots of good things about the YWCA, and nothing bad. It is in a great location.

services in the early morning hours. You can do some sightseeing after the assessment.
The main Vancouver Library is about 2 blocks from the Y and there are shops
in the library that sell transit passes. Anyway good luck with the assessment.

Re: Nurses coming to Lower Mainland BC
Hi Folks,
I have been coming on to this site for a while now and have found it very useful.I was wondering though, there are several health authorities in BC and there does not seem to be anyone specifically that you can talk to from the UK if you wanted to about working here,I just wondered if anyone would be interested in this sort of thing being set up by the health authorities,I am happy to be a port of call and have helped a couple of people so far,in fact I am sure they would support me in saying that it would be good to have someone there for a chat or whatever,I know I found it hard but was lucky to have my best friend here which helped tremendously,so if anyone is interested and if I can help anyone let me know, just a thought for the future as there are so many nurses coming from the UK it would be good to have 1 or 2 people who they could contact, thanks for reading this and I value your feedback,Cathy

Hi
I am also very open to people contacting me...either through PM or on here.
I too work for Fraser Health but in the community. I also have a great friend here from the UK who is a Operational Lead (Nurse Manager) at St.Pauls hospital in Vancouver. He would also be able to help/advise.

Great idea Cathy
I have been here almost 3 years now and am a manager with Providence Health Care in Vancouver. I am more than happy for any UK nurses to contact me for information and advice as, having been through the process and now helping my own UK recruits settle, I understand the stress/excitement/questions.

Hi Cathy, I read your posting and agree that there seems to be a lack of a central source of info for nurses recruited from the UK. I was initially in contact with an organisation known as Healthmatch BC and they were helpful with regards to immigration options etc. However once I accepted employment, it was a case of finding things out for myself. Upon arrival, my employer did very little to help. A few of us used a relocation company recommended by and paid for by the employer however I found the service pretty basic and no help was given in regards to finding accommodation.
Another important factor, for Mental Health Nurses considering employment with BCMHAS at Riverview, is that Riveriew is being downsized and if your speciality is Adult servcies, beware that you are now highly likely to be placed in Geriatric services). I hope this info helps in some way.

I am pretty new to this site and was wondering if anyone had the time to spare to send me some information.
I am currently in my first year as a student nurse but once I graduate would love to be able to move over to Canada as soon as possible.
There is such a wealth of information not only though allnurses, google etc but on this site and it is difficult to know where to look and what to take a truth or fiction.
If anyone has any time to spare could they please give me a play by play of what I need to do to get over there. Its not that I am too lazy to research it myself, I just dont know where to start!
Many thanks

You need to make sure whilst at university that you get both clinical and theory in Mental health, Paeds, Obstetrics as well as general adult as Canadian training is like USA training and general trained. Once you are qualified check out the province college of registered nurses and check out the process for IEN (international educated nurse) as things may change. Complete application and wait for results. If eligible then look for employer and start process.
