The claim was in a report from the OECD. I tend to think they are reliable.
Anyway - here you go. A couple of tables showing debt that validates both our points of view. Canada is at the top of the second one; the one that indicates consumer credit as opposed to mortgages.

Still, the original point stands that Canadians owe more than brits and I expect that to continue.
