Hi Chris
Just took this off the Zoom web site.

A charge of $20.00 CDN, 10.00 GBP, 16.00 Euros or $20.00 US per kg will apply for any baggage carried in excess of the free allowance as above.

"NO FUEL" doesn't do the Aircraft any favours !

They just do not want to put too much in.
The less fuel they carry back and forth the cheaper our ticket price’s are.
Well thats what they tell us.
There is a safety factor in the calculations.

But plenty of people get on the plane with only one bag....

Not to mention that they dont weigh people.... I am 110kg, my missus half that.... theres 50kg un accounted for!

What would happen if everyone on the plane arrived with full baggage allowance and were all the size of your average front row prop??..... The bloody thing wouldn't take off??

Not really when you look at the total mass of the fully ladened aircraft.
Dont worry about it.
Just look at all the fatties boarding the aircraft.
Its all taken into account.

Got charged an extra £40 for being 25 kilos case weight with Canadian affair this June flying from Glasgow to Toronto. I explained I was going to my daughter's wedding and was carrying the groom's kilt but it cut no ice and I had to stump up. (The weight of all the sweeties and the 45 Penguin biscuits didn't help either!)

Have to laugh as well at the insistance on only one piece of hand luggage. I of course put my handbag inside my holdall for the purpose of going through the passport control and then in duty free extracted my handbag and then proceeded to buy two more carrier bags worth of stuff so ended up boarding with 4 bags and no questions asked.

It used to be:

1 Piece of hand luggage
1 Personal item (small handbag, etc)
1 Laptop (in sleeve, not a full bag)
1 Umbrella
1 Jacket

Not forgetting the duty free bags!

If you'd played it right you could get loads on!

Once I was well overweight travelling from Heathrow to NZ....

It was the middle of summer in the UK (and nearly 30c!) and Winter in NZ.

After an argument with the check-in girl about "sporting-goods allowance" and yes I can count a boot bag, a ski bag and poles as one peice of baggage... she then got arsey about me being over my baggage allowance.

In the end I went away, took out all of my heavy ski gear, winter hiking boots and a heavy fleece and put it on over my jeans and t-shirt....

Dripping with sweat I returned to the counter and... voila!.... my bags were ok... I did look stupid until I got on the plane, but I was on a mission

As soon as I got on the plane, I stripped off and filled an overhead locker with clothes!

The hostesses were laughing with me too

Just to top it off.... there was only 15 passengers on the plane, everyone had their own row!

A lot depends on who you get checking your baggage in for you too. Back in May when I went to Vancouver for a month with Zoom, my case weighed 24 kg and I was charged for excess baggage. My friend who checked in with someone else, had a case weighing 28KG and didn't have to pay anything Maybe it's all to do with how much charm you have

It's less to do with overweight aircraft not being able to take off, not at least on any of the big jets, more to do with knowing the weight to distribute it correctly. These commercial jets usually carry cargo too, and can sacrifice cargo if needed.

On some flights that land at 'hot' and 'high' airports then overall weight restrictions become very important.

I have seen a picture of a 747 arse up due to incorrect loading
