Default Luggage allowance: daft question

We're flying on Monday with Thomas Cook - luggage allowance is 20kg ea and there's three of us. Do the suitcases have to be split exactly 20kg ea or can one of them be over and one of them under etc? i.e. all three will be weighed and come in under 60kg?

It will go on the combined weights , not individually, as far as I am aware. Good luck with your trip!

In the small print you will find there is a maximum weight for any one case.
All to do with health and safety for the baggage handlers.
They can only throw a case up to a certain weights

We just arrived on Sunday, having flown with Thomas cook. All our cases (4) were well over 20kg. We were ushered into the "premium" queue so the guy at the desk must have thought we'd paid for premium seats (we hadn't). There, the max is 30kg per case, but 2 of out cases were still over. After some juggling of the weight we got them all under 30kg and fortunately weren't charged any excess baggage!

It is based on each ticket, each case is weighed seprately. So if you have one case each, they each have to be under 20kg, it is not aggregated. It does also depend on the check in clerk, so be prepared if you are over to pay extra (especially on the charter airlines) or to be repacking your smalls!

Also, they might want to weigh your hand luggage. When we flew over with zoom there was a 5 kg per bag limit; I think both of ours were around 12 kg each. Our checked-in bags were also over the limit; I think we ended up paying about £60 in excess baggage fees, which wasn't too bad at all considering how far over we were.

We generally take 3 cases for the 4 of us and check-in have always used combined weight. They do ask that each piece of luggage weighs no more than 30 kg as it becomes too heavy for baggage handlers.

Normally it's supposed to be per case, but they might let you off +/- a couple of kg. Put the lightest case on the scales first.

The absolute maximum for any case with any airline is 32kg / 70lb. Beyond that it goes cargo.

That is always a chance you can take, depends on the aircraft load as to whether they take it. With increasing fuel costs airlines do not want to carry unpaid weight. Freight is where the money is made and the more excess weight the self loading cargo has the less capacity for paid freight.

Check the airlines Terms of Carrige and their website for policy....

Generally Airlines will pool baggage allowance for the whole group, however there is a MAX of 32KG for any one item, Anything over 32kg will not be carried, full stop! (might hurt the handlers!)

If you read the small print, sometimes airlines apply a one-off charge for being overweight and this allows you to pack to the full 32kg per bag, but this is subject to how much weight they already have on the plane (I would def get there early... it does help when it comes to excess weight!)

Air Canada for example charged me USD$50 total for me and my partner... and we could then take 32kg per bag

Thanks for the replies, we won't get anywhere close to 30kg's - we have 22, 20 and 16 at the moment, so we just need to juggle things around a little. The 16kg one is a small case, so might just ditch that and get a normal case - problem solved!

If everyone got away with overweight luggage then you wouldn't be doing the Aircraft any favours !
(not that i`m terrified of flying)

It has nothing to do with stresses exerted on the aircraft.
The caption needs to know the weight of the aircraft so that he can ensure they put enough fuel in to it so they can reach their destination.
