I didn't notice either and I know who she is, all through the campaign I heard "she's *so* hot" each time she was on the TV.

Your analogy is interesting as at first glance your right both looks very similar (two bright points of light), and without any additional support such as a telescope you be hard pushed to quickly determine otherwise..
given enough time and awareness of celestial mechanics you’d be able determine that due to the differing paths across the heaven that they are not the same..
you’d need more understanding to determine that one was a planet and reflecting light and the other a distant star emitting light.

And granted using spectral analysis you can determine the difference of absorption rather than emission spectra..

Having said that both are to the naked eye still two bright points of light in the sky!!

They dress differently.

They speak French.

In the 20-30 age bracket, the Quebecoise have a penchant for a certain type of cosmetic surgery.

So, if you're in Ottawa and spot a dark-haired, slim, pretty (albeit with a Gallic nose), well-dressed girl with suspicious boobs, she's probably from Quebec.

I think the US and Canadian societies have never been more different in my lifetime. The two societies are growing apart, not together, in spite of what people may think in Europe.

but that’s it!! no matter how hard you try, your too close to the issue....

Take a look from further back and ‘yes’ to you they may be moving further apart...

but as every body else is moving further way faster, then relatively speaking to every body else they appear to be getting closer…

I do well with celestial analogies

In other words, from your position you view the US of A and see a long wave frequency shift because you are moving away faster and faster from it. Then you view Canada and see the same long wave frequency shift because you are also moving away faster and faster from it too. Consequently, you Europeans have erroneously concluded that Canada and the US are moving together in relative terms when in fact they are not!

Albert E. is turning in his grave over this discussion.

I'm not moving away. I'm shuffling back and forth. I see no great and widening chasm. In fact, I expect Mr. Harper and Mr. Bush will get along much better than M. Chretien and Mr. Bush.

or alternatively

Relative to the Europe..

Canada and America are getting closer..

you see ‘you’ chose to judge it from you own point of reference it's about how you declare your geometry..

keep the assumed distance between Europe and North America constant then you appear to get closer…. I assume an almost constant cultural difference between Europe and North America

Its all about perspective
