I was asked the same when I was in NS earlier this year - thought I must have just looked dodgy, but perhaps they ask all tourists!
LOL - I can't think of anyone who looks LESS dodgy than you! |

I mentioned to a work colleague where I lived in Toronto. This was followed by an audible gasp and swift mention of the word "slum". Living there, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It turns out that she envisions rampant homeless people and droves of immigrants, both qualities which, to me, sum up Toronto in general.
Of course, this person just has a very insulted view of the city, if not the world, and rarely leaves her own little suburban enclave. |

Moving to a place she's never been to and dismissing the country she lives in is a craphole doesn't seem to be in any wise men's proverbs. Peaches for eaches though. :] Thanks for you constructive points of view though. |
Re: Had enough of UK now...Starting process ASAP!!!!
I humbly do not wish to argue you with you in a contrived way at all.
But come on, your not proud of your city. Neither this thread nor your intentions indicate pride. What they do indicate is a weariness of having to deal with drunk pikeys and a belief that everywhere in England is full of the same people. I certainly didn't mean to offend you. I was merely straight talking, advising you theres a crap part of every country and you happen to be smack bang in the worst part of the Uk. If you move to a crap part of Canada it'll be the same. Always better to move country out of love not hate. |

While it's true that violent crime exists in every city, I think perception has a lot to do with it.
While people here are using facts to try and convince, human beings don't live their lives in a factual way. If she moved out here she'd probably feel "oh thank goodness we left that awful place". While she might be biased in thinking that, there's nothing wrong with it and it's actually a great motivator to move, even if she could have found somewhere nicer in England for example. Who cares, if you've got a reason to leave, just do it, it's not a big deal if you haven't investigated every possibility if in the end you feel very happy with your decision. I certainly feel happy with mine. We are all shaped by our own experiences of a place, good and bad. |

I had some similar incidents when living in the UK. I got tired of not being able to go out for a drink without worrying about some mindless, drunken yobs causing trouble. There always seemed to be a yob culture with a simmering underlying aggression omnipresent.
Road rage was always an issue (confirmed again by a trip back to the UK last year when we were the victims of road rage barely 5 mins after leaving the airport). I got tired of taking my kids to playgrounds and parks covered with litter, broken glass and dog crap. There would invariably be older kids hanging out there - smoking, drinking and cursing. Anything left unattended and not bolted down usually got nicked. Now these issues are not unique to the UK but I just seemed to encounter them much more often in the UK - probably something to do with more people in a smaller area. |

Once we'd made friends we used to go out quite a lot. Well, until they started on shooters and all went home by 6pm leaving it mainly Brits 'til chucking out time. Or, ending up in the Arts Club on the deck. Had some absolute belly laugh moments on the that deck.
Houses are generally better here for entertaining as they are generally bigger and typically detached. My local is literally 90 percent Brits (at least round the bar) where I tend to pop in about once a week or so. When I did go out I avoided downtown and often went to the Sandbar and sometimes ended up at the Arts Club or on an odd occassion the Yale. If you have not been here for a while you will be surprised at how many more bars and pubs there are compared to even 5 years ago. Gastown has had an incredible tranformation and is where the locals tend to go for a night out rather than Granville which is tpically the bridge and tunnel crowd but even there has some neat pubs etc, again an incredible turn around in the last 2 years or so. Off the top of my head some places you may not of heard of and some oldies made good again: The Irish Heather (new location - the old one is a restaurant now), The Blarney Stone (more pub than squalid night club these days), the Diamond, Guilt, Alibi Room, 5 acres, pourhouse, metropole, lamplighter (redo), smileys, the new oxford, cinema, academic, Chill Winstons, Charlies, London Pub, BlackFrog, Relish, Kingston TapHouse, Library Square, Yaggers, St Regis, elephant and castle (about as much soul as weatherspoons, although not as cheap but ok for a swift one) there are some others who's names I don't know. Pubs now stay open till 1 am through the week till 2 on weekends, pub primary licences can stay open till 3 am. |
