I know that I work with the extremes but when I go into the schools and see how little respect most of the children have for themselves, each other and adults is a worry, some of the schools also have police officers on site most of the time as well.
Like I say although this view can be balanced out by good children and parents which there are many of, in all my years I have noticed an increase in the masses becoming more anti-social. personally I blame the Jeremy Kyle show:thumbdown: School children do seem to have more respect, though. |

Also London is rubbish, I grew up in Brixton it was great but I wouldn't live in London for love or money. why are poeple trying to pursuade her to stay in England? It sounds like she has been thinking about it for some time but this was the straw that broke the camels back. Which did you mean? By great did you really mean so-so? I lived in Beaconsfield (just outside london), Richmond and I also lived in Hammersmith. Beaconsfield is beautiful and very sleepy town with a 30 min train to London and Richmond is about the same. Very picturesque with London on your doorstop. All the good bits of small town life with one of the greatest cities on your doorstep for theatre, concerts, gigs, comedians. I had a great time :) (and by great I mean I look back very fondly on those times deeply cherishing those areas) I don't think anyone seeks to actively discourage her. Maybe it's better that she investigates other areas in the UK before attempting to leave the country.. Don't you think it would be in her benefit to educate herself in various other towns in the UK, if nothing for the title of this thread? That way at least she's moving to Canada knowing all her options and actively seeking the one that suits her. Richie poos x |
Re: Had enough of UK now...Starting process ASAP!!!!
Ok just to put this to bed....We are not upping sticks on a rash whim. As i have mentioned on a couple of occassions we have really been looking into emigrating for the past year and a half. Maybe it was a sweeping statement for parties that want to remain etc in the UK but for me and my OH that is how we personally feel.
I know that crime/drugs and so forth happen in all areas all over the world and we are not deluded about that but as previous poster advised that this has spurred us on. We are not running away. We genuinely want to emigrate to Canada as I'm sure many others who read, post, remain in the UK and those that have successully made the leap also do otherwise we would not all be on this site. Thanks for all previous replies. :) |

When you look to the reasons why children in the UK are as feral as you all say they are, you need to look in the mirror and at your neighbours. Government doesn`t dictate how children behave, society does.

While it's true that violent crime exists in every city, I think perception has a lot to do with it.
While people here are using facts to try and convince, human beings don't live their lives in a factual way. If she moved out here she'd probably feel "oh thank goodness we left that awful place". While she might be biased in thinking that, there's nothing wrong with it and it's actually a great motivator to move, even if she could have found somewhere nicer in England for example. Who cares, if you've got a reason to leave, just do it, it's not a big deal if you haven't investigated every possibility if in the end you feel very happy with your decision. I certainly feel happy with mine. |

OH went to meet friends after work on Sat for a few pints(was installing heating in a friends house). At approx 11pm a little no-mark to-rag decided to cause trouble.OH decided to leave as he could not be bothered arguing with a 17/18 year old KID! and as his back was turned the little ***** smashed a bottle and threw it at him. As he turned to face the lad he threw another bottle which hit him on the head and smashed(Hope the police get hold of the lad before OH does!!) -Was in hospital from 1am Sat morning till 8pm last night...X-Rays/CT scans and a specialist later he has a fractured skull and possible damage in his right ear due to the blow. I don't understand why in this day and age somebody would do that...It has confirmed what we originally wanted, a nicer area to live and work and where we can bring (future) children up. I know there's trouble in all areas but we don't want to be scared to go out with friends for a drink incase some mindeless yob takes it upon himself to cause trouble! Sorry rant over!!!!! P.S We're not packing up because of this-Been looking seriously into things for 1.5 years!!! Road rage was always an issue (confirmed again by a trip back to the UK last year when we were the victims of road rage barely 5 mins after leaving the airport). I got tired of taking my kids to playgrounds and parks covered with litter, broken glass and dog crap. There would invariably be older kids hanging out there - smoking, drinking and cursing. Anything left unattended and not bolted down usually got nicked. Now these issues are not unique to the UK but I just seemed to encounter them much more often in the UK - probably something to do with more people in a smaller area. |
Re: Had enough of UK now...Starting process ASAP!!!!
Sorry to hear your husband was glassed.
As some one who frequented the night life heavily in the UK and who frequents it heavily in Toronto- it is easily better/safer over here on a night out. In 3 years in Manchester I saw numerous incidents of violence. In my home town of Farnham in the UK I saw numerous incidents of violence. Reading was up there with Manchester for dust ups. London was more chilled but in certain bars there was still the occasional ruck. In two years in Toronto I've never seen a thing. Every one in the pubs and bars is more laid back and the table service culture definatley helps defuse the situation. People here aren't tipping alcohol down like there is no tomorrow and just generally when you go out you can relax more. There is crime every where but in the UK I do agree with the assertion that most high street's on weekends are over run by complete piss head's on the rampage- and I can understand why a lot of people are scared to go out. Just wait till New Years eve when they have the yearly emergency services stretched article in all the papers again. |
Re: Had enough of UK now...Starting process ASAP!!!!
In my local town the police are stretched on most Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights dealing with the same drunk morons week in week out.
Problem is, what are you going to do? I think the world is now set such that chavs breed chavs and the rest of us try to find areas of the planet that are less inhabited by morons who are no longer getting dealt with by Darwin's theory of evolution. |

Fairy dust. Was only trying to be helpful.
Moving to a place she's never been to and dismissing the country she lives in is a craphole doesn't seem to be in any wise men's proverbs. Peaches for eaches though. :] |

Re: Had enough of UK now...Starting process ASAP!!!!
I mentioned to a work colleague where I lived in Toronto. This was followed by an audible gasp and swift mention of the word "slum". Living there, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It turns out that she envisions rampant homeless people and droves of immigrants, both qualities which, to me, sum up Toronto in general.
Of course, this person just has a very insulted view of the city, if not the world, and rarely leaves her own little suburban enclave. |

This is exactly how people here think of Guelph. "We were in Bloom's on the weekend" I'll say and the reponse will be "and you were ok?". "We went for shwarma last night" elicts a gasp and the hope that, for safety, we drove rather than walked. I wonder if we shouldn't move, to Essex perhaps, or Berkshire, somewhere generally perceived to be safe.
