Ah, I see. Did not know that, not a route I've ever paid much attention to before.
So what happens if processing takes longer than a year then? I guess you still have to pay again, doesn't seem terribly fair to me. |

Just looking at your sig, yours took a matter of weeks?
The approval for my wife to sponsor me took a matter of weeks. We're now in the system within London and so far it's being processed as we speak. How long it eventually takes end to end is anyones guess. |
Re: First Steps! UK -> Canada
How long is a permanent resident visa valid? A permanent resident visa is issued for a period not exceeding the earlier of the expiry date of the medical results for you and your family members or the expiry date of your or your family members’ passport. Permanent resident visas cannot be extended once issued. If applicants do not use the visas within their validity period, they must re-apply for immigration to Canada. Their sponsor will have to submit a new sponsorship application and pay new processing fees. |
Re: First Steps! UK -> Canada
In my case going through common-law my time line was:
Med - Nov 07 Police Check - Dec 07 Application sent to Canada - Jan 08 Application sent to London CIC for processing - Feb 08 Passport Request July 08 Landed as PR Aug 08 Common-law and spouse apps are much faster and I found even with the amount of paperwork the process to be rather pain free. My OH did have a job to go to in Toronto but I don't think that would have mattered as we have family in Windsor and we gave a reason of wanting to be closer to family in our app. As someone else has mentioned there is nothing stopping you coming over to Canada with your wife whilst the application is in process - just give CIC London an updated address in Canada - once you get your VISA you can flag pole at either Fort Erie/Buffalo, Niagara Falls or Detriot. When you land as PR the VISA placed in your passport is scored out and the IMM5292 form will be affixed to your passport - you'll then be advised your Perment Residency card will be with you in approx 10 days, from there SIN and OHIP card can be applied (3 months from date of Landing for OHIP) I was 26 when I went through the process last year. |

This is from the immigrants guide. So, since my medical is tomorrow, my PR will expire (all being well) a year from tomorrow? Is that right? What do I do at that stage?

Your PR visa, not your PR will expire a year from the medical. So assuming you get PR granted within 2-7 months you then have until the anniversary of your medical to 'Land' and activate your PR. Don't leave it to the last minute!

Thanks so much for that timeline. So after your medical is 12 months old your PR doesn't expire then? (See my quote above).

Re: First Steps! UK -> Canada
I've posted this in the "medical" thread, but I wanted to post it here too for blogging sake! If someone takes the same path as me in the future it may prove useful.
--- Well, I just got back from my medical and figured I'd report here. It was at the medical practice in Altrincham, Manchester for 1130. The parking outside was pretty poor, about 8 spaces. There is a public car park just 2 minutes walk away, so I parked there (£2 for 2 hours) and went in. I saw a doctor called Kevin who was very well mannered and a nice guy. He talked me through the forms and gave me a clean bill of health. I was paid up and out of there for 1200. He gave me the number to call for the x-ray place (St Johns Street, just off Deansgate in central Manchester) and told me to give them a call, letting them know I'm heading up for an X-ray. I mentioned the 4 hour wait kmcguinness and he was pretty shocked, although, I may have misread your post now I look at it again! It took about 20 mins to drive up there and the on street parking outside the place was £3 for 90 mins. I was in and out in 45. A successful day! --- I've found someone to countersign my picture for the Police Certificate, so that will be sent to that person today who will then post it on to the Police. |
Re: First Steps! UK -> Canada
I've just been scanning over my forms while awaiting the return of my police report (eta two weeks today). And there are 2 points that are concerning me at little.
In all forms where it asks addresses and employment info, what do I put as the END date for these if I'm still living / working there? Do I enter the same date as the date next to the signature at the end of the form? Will they naturally assume that I still live in those places and work at that place? Also, in the background declaration it asks for all places I've lived since I was 18. I know all the info for the past 5 years, but past that (another 4 years) I lived on and off at 3 flats while returning to my parents for a while every year or so. All these addresses are on the Isle Of Man. Should I just enter a single address for that period or try and find the dates (nearby impossible!). Apart from those two things, my forms are complete! |

Ok so for the END date i just put "present" in the box. I'm sure that or "to date" or another variation will be fine. For the addresses, i too had a couple of addresses that i lived short term but seeing as though i was still registered for voting etc at my parents (car ins, banking etc too) i just put their address for that period. |

Are you being sponsored alone, or are there some dependants in tow? |
