Emigrating with pets

Re: Emigrating with pets
All the posts above cover flights and vari-kennels and what not. Its no big deal really and not overly expensive, no need to hire some expensive firm to do it for you...
However what isn't mentioned is the long term impact on your pet of the whole moving process, its a very stressful time for a dog, from when you start decorating to sell up your UK house, then weird people visit, then all the furniture disappears, then he's in a weird little moving box for hours and wynds up in a weird place with weird smells and it could be months again before you find a permanent home and the boxes and cases disappear....
We wouldn't be without our dog and brought him with us, he's essentially fine despite all this. But.... he has nipped at a few strangers, which is utterly out of character for him and we're having to just keep his world as calm as possible to let him re-adjust and relax in his new environment. Our dog is a big friendly giant that doesn't get stressed easily, if it impacted him then others must have similar issues.
Throw into this mix the fun you have finding a place to stay that accepts pets... and getting your dog, kennel, people and all your masses of cases to the airport at each end!! Way harder to fix than the flight!!
I'm just saying there's more to bringing your pet than just the flight! Good luck

Use Air Transat, buy the vari-kennels directly and organise the paperwork yourself. air Transat will take larger dogs ( we checked and brought our Lab with us 3 months ago) the DEFRA website tells you all you need to know about the paperwork and they are also very helpful if you have any questions.

See air transat details here:
http://www.airtransat.co.uk/en/gamme...voyageur&id=20
Price per pet is GBP180..
You will need a kennel on top of this, price is size dependant, but they are roughly 100 ish. Try here http://www.skykennel.co.uk/
For rentals try www.realtor.ca... but you are best to get a realtor to help you for this, its very difficult to sort renting or accommodation here without help, specially with a dog.

We are flying from MAN to YVR on 26th October with Air Transat.
Cocker Spaniel as excess baggage £180. We had to speak to Montreal to arrange as excess baggage. UK end wanted the dog t go as cargo - which was about £600.
Vari Kennel cost us £80.
You have to change the plastic wing nuts for metal ones (apparently).

Try kijiji.ca or craigslist.ca (but watch out for scammers on the latter).
For Kelowna, Castanet.net is the best source.

So to confirm: I do not need a Defra letter to fly my Labrador from Gatwick to Calgary - my vet was unsure? We fly on 15th September and my vet didn't there was time to get letter from Defra but will be supplying Pet Passport and fit to fly documentation.
Also where's the cheapest and quickest way to get a xl Vari kennel?
