Re: Crime rates in Canada
lol not sure if your being sarcastic. I see you live in Brampton so im sure you know something about crime. Regardless im sure I would feel a lot safer walking in any place in Edmonton and Winnipeg than places like Rexdale and Vaughan and oakwood or Kingstoad Road in Scarborough. From what I know those types of places dont exist in the cities that are statistically more dangerous than Toronto.

You may well feel safer walking down the streets in Edmonton and Winnipeg....
its just simply that in reality your not safer.........

Otherwise your odds of being mugged let alone murdered are very, very, low and thats in the worst areas, out of them the average person in the street is VERY safe in Winnipeg.
Some young native gang girls did a few muggings recently in the downtown, but they were soon arrested.
Violent Crime is mostly contained within The North End, The West End and Downtown and 95% in the hours of darkness. Crime in the burbs is very low.

Gang crime stay in gangs and every body ignores it.. until somebody accidentally get in the way.... Boxing day!!!!!!!!!!! Jane Creba ring any bells
maybe that why we're safer, we don't pretend its safe or attempt to ignore the gang on gang, or drug related crime, it gets dealt with!

Hey MikeUK,
Im wondering if you actually live in Brampton? You said the "reality is that your not safer in Edmonton and Winnipeg". Are you saying statistically your not safer? Because I can bet in reality there is a large difference between walking walking through Jane and Finch, or walking in what are the bad parts of say Winnipeg.
I would propose that most of the people in Edmonton and Winnipeg would feel that they are in a neighbourhood with higher crime rate walking through Regent park in Toronto than they would compared to the neighbourhoods back home

Yes, I do live in Brampton, and crime isn’t much of an issue here much like any other boring middle class suburb of a major city, the peel region is going to be as exciting and as violent as Slough or reading great for the world of joe average 2.2
I think some stats will put things in perspective
This is the overall rankings
http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/03/04/t...%80%94by-rank/
This shows Aggravated assault which may be a better reflection of your risk of getting hurt
http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/03/04/t...vated-assault/
Or you could look at sexual assault, again this would show a trend that would be more indicative of your personal risk, and likely to be less impacted by gang or drug issues than other groupings
http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/03/04/t...exual-assault/
Why? because one is driven by a partial immigrant community and one by a native one, shitty districts are the same throughout north America, they have gangs, drugs and poverty.
The irony is a that is Jane and Finch were so dangerous we'd see/have huge issues at York university, I’ve attended conferences and training courses in that area, certainly during working hours you’d wonder what all the fuss is about
That may be true, but all too often perception is the opposite of reality

Re: Crime rates in Canada
I see im not going to change your mind but if you read the links about "comments" by readers from Saskatoon I think you will get the idea how people feel about living there.
Toronto's crime rating is so low because the fact there are 2.6 million people living in the city and approximately 6 million including the surrounding areas. There are a ton of good neighbourhoods in Toronto and these thousands of law abiding citizens make that rate low compared to other much smaller cities in Canada. As stated by another poster crime is usually concentrated in smaller areas. As well with such a low number of people and a low number of incidents the numbers get extremely inflated:
Ex. Barrie with a population of 125,000 people had 6 murders the other year and was called the murder capital of Ontario.
Now trying walking anywhere in barrie at anytime of day and feeling the LEAST BIT SCARED, you can not tell me that Barrie is at all dangerous from that small statistic.
Saskatoon had a whopping 2 murders in 2008, while Toronto had 70, and neighbouring Peel Region had 27. That same year Toronto had 336 shootings. Butyour going to tell me that Saskatoon is much safer statistically right?
If you removed all of the good people from both cities and just concentrated on the bad areas of both cities I think you would have your real statistics and answer on which is a safer place to live.

we have a gang war currently going on in the west side of the city, 14 yr old boy gang related shot dead in a field, another young man was shot at a bus stop his fault was mistaken identity (crime doesn't stay inside the gangs for long, but some might tell you that)
and we're still safer than most other cities in Canada and the US
welcome to North America

Again a bizarre choice of location within Toronto. My daughter was a lifeguard at the pool in Regent Park, it wasn't one of the pools at which an escort to the TTC was provided because it's not one in area with a lot of violence.
