Cell Phone - Which Network ? What Plan ?
#16
Twas the same with my Tesco deal, it jumped out at me so I got it for my 17 yr old and me (hubby on another deal). It's not available any more. It's good to know there are deals to be had occasionally though, especially with a teen in tow. He'll be texting his UK friends I expect, although I wonder if the deals will include international? I doubt it.....

Hello all.....bumping this thread because we're moving to Burlington Ontario area early July and now need to look at this again. I've researched this online and to be honest, I find all the different providers with all their different plans to be soooooo confusing. What we need (two adults, one 17yr old) is simply unlimited local calls, unlimited international texting.....anything else would be a bonus (I guess voicemail would be useful). We started looking at smartphones, primarily for things like satnav included but the monthly deals seem really expensive (certainly compared to UK). As mentioned above, son and I pay £10/month for 5000 texts, 500 mins and free voicemail. Pretty certain that's not going to happen over there though. Getting to the point now....which shops would you go to to get the best advice/deals please?

Excellent, thanks for your prompt response!

Just check the coverage as Wind don't cover everywhere without 'roaming'.

Just looked at the two suggested providers but they don't seem to offer much for international packages. Do you think dealing face-to-face offers a better chance of a deal?

I know Koodo & FIDO do international text packages. I get unlimited texts including international for an extra $5 a month.
You won't find any overall deal as close to the UK costs unfortunately though.

I live about 10 miles from downtown Vancouver and live in the Away/roaming zone on WIND or Mobilicity so would have been charged for every call and text when out and about near home.
I recently got a smart phone and looked into all the different providers and plans. By far the most straightforward description of plans and charges was on the Virgin website. In the end I stuck with Virgin who offered the best deal for my needs: PAYG but paying $20/mo plus 10c/min and 10c/text charges - free voicemail, free caller ID, no bogus system access/911 charges (911 charging requirement seems to vary by province), 100MB data. My monthly cost is about $25 on average. The "break-even" for calls compared to just paying the 35c/min and no monthly charge is about 40 minutes of call time incoming and outgoing, without including paying for data costs. Disadvantages with Virgin PAYG are not being able to use the phone in the US for calls/texts, though I can still use wifi (and Virgin monthly plans and contracts allow US use), the per minute rather than per second charging and the Tab offers seemed to be useless for my low level of use.
The next cheapest options for my usage profile from other providers were coming in at about $35/mo.

I like Virgin or Koodo. Both do some good packages, with canada wide minutes.
