From everything in this thread, Ontario sounds awful. And people (well, Easterners mostly) love to point fingers at Alberta.

Ontario was okay, a little weird with the milk in bags, but whatever floats their milk boat.
I wouldn't choose to return however, I find the west coast is more to my liking, but eh west coast best coast. :p |

. As for affordability, what standard makes it affordable? An income of $30K a year or $60K or do you need to earn a 6 digit income? The price of the home is not essentially what makes a home affordable but the ability of the proposed homeowner to qualify to get a mortgage and continue payments for the term of its contract. |

I'm still trying to work out how a country can be a scam. Maybe a cartographer stuffed up?

It's one of those little attention paid to but important factors. Same as looking at potential homes and making sure you have somewhere to push the snow. |

I'll have to ask them about that. Our family, itself, is doing well. Each member, with the exception of one, owns their own home.

Median household income is generally used to determine affordability of a housing market, Vancouver for example house prices for a fixer upper or tear down are in the 10-13 time the median household income, thus isn't an affordable housing market and you need a 150,000+ to afford a typical home, home not necessairly being a house, townhouses and condos are not exactly affordable either anymore when compared to median household income.

Not much to add. Enjoyed the OP's original rant. I wonder if by "Canadians" he meant so-called "Cradles"? In any case, empirically false on the racism (nationally) given the high level of immigration and cohesion.
It has a nasty racist taste for me, as if you are looking down on them. ................. and that is really the essence of racism is it not???? The worst racism that I have seen against First Nations peoples was close to where we had our cabin in central BC. It was the British and European immigrants who were the worst examples of racist red necks. |

Cradle Canadian was a phrase used by conservative Canadians to differentiate themselves from us, the filthy immigrants. I turned it into a mildly insulting term for them, The worst racism toward natives I've seen was acting as a pimp for a native. Lots of firms would send him away regardless of competence, but that's the consulting business, lots of firms want s discount if you send them a woman. Any kind of preference/prejudice is ok and. at least, there's no pretense involved. |

I wouldn't choose to return however, I find the west coast is more to my liking, but eh west coast best coast. :p I wouldn't call Canada a scam, it's certainly not going to work out for everyone who comes here, some find happiness and success, others find they hate it but can't afford to leave, others hate it, can afford to leave, leave and never look back and we don't tend to hear from those folks as much since they left, found somewhere more to their liking, but doesn't make Canada a scam, I am fairly vocal at times about my frustration with Canada, fall into the rather not be here, but I can't afford to move and at this point in life, it's just not feasible with a Canadian spouse, however calling Canada a scam really is not accurate, it sounds like the place you chose doesn't fit your needs. And naturally any immigrant driven country has to advertise, that their country is the best destination. So Canadian politicians will always tell you that Canada is the top choice for immigrants. It's the same as talking to a car salesman or an insurance salesman. And blaming just a negative professional experience of the whole of Canada is probably just showing emotions. As written before, even though the visa approval and naturalization process has gotten more complicated as it was 15 years ago, but it's still a process which is acceptable, gives your a form of permanence and good prospects for long term planning. For instance as far as I know in Switzerland, all the residency visas are temporary, depending on money of the applicant..... |

It's reclaimed language. You know how Tottenham historically had a lot of Jewish support so supporters of clubs with an established racist tradition, particularly Chelsea, would hiss gas chamber noises at them and call them Yids? Now. controversially, the Tottenham supporters call themselves the Yid Army and Being A Yid is a popular Tottenham song. The same applies to black Americans and their adoption of a well known insulting term. Arguably. the same happened with "Queer", once an insult, there's now a proud Queer Culture.
Cradle Canadian was a phrase used by conservative Canadians to differentiate themselves from us, the filthy immigrants. I turned it into a mildly insulting term for them, And now you're asking us to believe that "Cradle Canadian" -- a term that you've seemingly made up entirely, based on the lack of Google hits it returns -- should be turned into a term of insult, for the conservative group of Canadians you imagine to be using it, as a term of identity and/or pride. And that process of vilification would somehow also be "reclaimed language"?? |

So in your first paragraph, you describe the adoption of a term of opprobrium -- variously on religious / racial / sexual-orientation grounds -- by the oppressed group as a term of pride, and describe that as "reclaimed language". OK.

And that process of vilification would somehow also be "reclaimed language"?? That's approximately right. I didn't invent the expression but read it here, used as a positive differentiator. I take it you identify as a cis cradle, do you find the expression insulting or a point of pride? |
