Just to be clear, I was happy with you thinking of my bollocks. The deletion wasn't at my behest.

Even if one were interested, that leaves little time for studying the nuances of fiscal and population policies under the various administrations. Anyway, if one cared, one would have trouble choosing the least bad regime for treatment of the native populations by colonial administrations. Yikes, they're all terrible!

Aboriginal Canadians are held in their reservations by a range of coercive policies. Some do leave. One can, for example, see numbers of them sleeping rough in Toronto parks. I personally have little difficulty in seeing why people do not choose to give up their tax exempt status to move from a tar paper shack on a reservation to a shared park bench. The one offers poisoned water, the other no water at all. Offered no future, one may as well take the money, and the drugs, and stay put, there's no need for legislation requiring that, only if that policy goal were not currently being achieved would there be a need for further legislation.

It's popularly called the "Injun Card" I expect google can convert that to the official name and image.

Have you been around Caledonia, 6 Nations of the Grand River and Ohswekan areas lately? Far from tar paper shacks, some are quite palatial, in this case Chief Hill's place, sadly he recently died

Not much to add. Enjoyed the OP's original rant. I wonder if by "Canadians" he meant so-called "Cradles"? In any case, empirically false on the racism (nationally) given the high level of immigration and cohesion.

Canadian racism doesn't primarily involve immigrants. Immigrants have their own racisms from their home countries and act, or don't act, on those as if they were at home.

The racism is between the cradles and the natives and it's getting worse. You know how, if you work at a place and the boss is a christian, every meeting starts with a little prayer? Well they've started doing that here but with the twist that it's a little gloat over taking the land where the speaker is sitting from the tribe it once belonged to. This is the only corporate engagement with the native population, no one is going to go out and actually hire a native, so it seems amazingly crass to me. Imagine if people had to do that in England? "We took your potatoes, nyah, nyah, nyah. We partitioned your country, aren't we clever. We introduced famine" etc. etc, you'd never get to reviewing the quarterly something-or-other report.

Is that not just some pushback on the "land recognition statement" (or whatever it's called, just heard the term recently) that has now become politically correct ?

Don't know. First heard it a month ago and was completely disconcerted (as, to be fair, was the person obliged to make the speech). It's the sort of thing fans of a victorious football team might say to fans of the losing team. Awful.

Kanawake, Quebec, where my in-laws live is much the same. Yes there are smaller and older homes but the reservation is growing and the growth is towards high end homes. All his Native nieces and nephews hold gainful employment both in and out of the reservation. His nephew teaches school just outside of Ottawa. His other nephew works IT in Toronto. His niece works for the Indian Council and his other niece is in IT in Montreal.

Are the homes on the reservation more affordable?

From everything in this thread, Ontario sounds awful. And people (well, Easterners mostly) love to point fingers at Alberta.

Ontario was okay, a little weird with the milk in bags, but whatever floats their milk boat.

I wouldn't choose to return however, I find the west coast is more to my liking, but eh west coast best coast. :p

I wouldn't call Canada a scam, it's certainly not going to work out for everyone who comes here, some find happiness and success, others find they hate it but can't afford to leave, others hate it, can afford to leave, leave and never look back and we don't tend to hear from those folks as much since they left, found somewhere more to their liking, but doesn't make Canada a scam, I am fairly vocal at times about my frustration with Canada, fall into the rather not be here, but I can't afford to move and at this point in life, it's just not feasible with a Canadian spouse, however calling Canada a scam really is not accurate, it sounds like the place you chose doesn't fit your needs.

I like Ontario (I haven't lived in any other Province) and have found people in the main to be welcoming, friendly, non-judgemental and easy to get along with. I don't recognise the behaviour people are mentioning here, I saw far worse living in Hong Kong, but not by the Brits or other 'Westerners'.
