To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
Hiya
It's about 12 months until we expect to land in Canada. I'm not sure whether I should stop buying clothes so I have less to ship (as we don't intend to get a container) or whether I should stock up in the UK sales. Don't really know the cost, quality or style of the clothes available out there. I've heard bras sold in Canada aren't that comfortable so I've been stocking up on them, but don't know how everything else compares. What are your thoughts? Cheers  Helen |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
I'd buy bras and shoes/boots, and if it's your thing, plain M&S cashmere mix jumpers - it was so hard to get anything as nice as those for the price.

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
Clothing for men is easy in BC.
November to March: fleece, shirt and jeans. April to October: T shirt and shorts. All year round: baseball cap. I can't help with the bras. |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
I would stock up on undies (men and women). I find good clothes expensive for example I have just bought a rain jacket - nothing fancy, waterproof/windproof and breathable with a hood that can tuck into the collar - $128. I didn't and wouldn't pay that (I got my discount). But then I'm one of these peeps that can't see the point of designer clothes that are twice the price of the same item without ETNIES or whatever written on it:unsure:

<Shakes head and goes elsewhere> i couldnt get bras to fit in the US, every time they measured me it was wrong :sneaky: |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
IMHO fashion is about 20 years behind, the only shoes I find have wedges on them like I wore at my wedding in 1975. Bra's yes do stock up, they are expensive unless you are flat chested :o
I like Hanes underwear and have been buying stocks from the US for years and can get the same sort in Zellers. I love Additionel for clothes and when they have a sale they are ok for prices. Winners is great -their prices for designer duds really good, but their prices for handbags is bloody rediculous so buy them from Bentleys and bugger the name tag. so in a nutshell, shoes and bras are my only issue. |

Buy undies & bra's that a definite!
When I moved out to NS in 2000 I went to buy a thong(!) to wear under ski pants and was promptly told by the lady in the shop ' Honey they don't keep your ass' warm in the winter! we do white knickers This big – THIS BIG and THIS BIG. If you want thongs you'll have to go to Montreal - those Frenchies wear thongs! So I remember when La Senza opened in Halifax my girlfriends and I thought we had died and gone to undie heaven! No seriously - NS has got better for nice undies but for price, selection and fit I would get them in the UK. Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
If you are the kind of person who loves shops like New Look and Primark for fashionable, cheap stuff, I would also stock up on that. Not much like that here - I can't wait to go mad on my first visit home!
|
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
Ive already asked my mum to send regular shipments of primark/new look stuff.
I noticed the last time i was there fashion was starting to catch up but oh how ill miss new look :( Karen |

A lot of people recommend Reitmans as good and cheap. They are cheap but the quality is *rap, (sorry fans of reitmans but the clothes either stretch or shrink after two washes). So I go better quality and it is then expensive. I totally agree with everyone else...... bras must be brought in the uk. When I did return to the uk this march I did notice how much cheaper clothes were in the uk which I had not noticed as much in previous years. |

No - I'm sorry - I don't understand !! If you see something you like, buy it. You never know when it might disappear from the shelves forever ;) An extra suitcase of stuff may be worth it, expecially when it is full of well-fitting bra's :p Just don't lose weight, or put it on when you get here ;) |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
Agree about cheap stuff, I miss things like toddler jeans for 2GBP in Tesco or Asda, there's nothing like that here. It's the same crappy jeans here but they'll be about 12 dollars ;)
Superstore is really trying to do an Asda with its "Joe" range, it's cheerful enough but sadly not as cheap. |

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
I do find this obsession with M&S (or Next) bras quite strange.
Do British women have unusually shaped boobs? Or is it the Canadians? Or, is there some sort of correlation between a desire to emigrate and buxomness? I think we should be told. |

Just for the record, us British girls have very normal BOOBS!!!!!!!!!! :D:D Some of us girls are smaller round the rib cage and fuller in the boob and some are the opposite!! Anyway, more than a hand full is a waste, as quoted by my hubby!!:blink: Hope this explains?????????????????:confused::confused::confused: Sue.... |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
I think Canadian styling is very different from European styling and not as fashionable.
I noticed on my last visit to Canada that the George range in Walmart is promoted as 'European Styling'. As an Imelda Marcos, I have never been tempted to buy shoes from holidays in Canada to add to my international shoe collection. I feel fully justified in shipping over my rather large collection!!!! I agree with comments re bras and underwear too..... |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
maybe british women want more lift and pert than canadians:p
less like an over the shoulder boulder holder:p |

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
While I did mention about not wanting to buy clothes because I'd have to ship them, I'm also trying to save the money I would normally spend on clothes. After reading through everyones posts I think I should only buy things I really really like and are a bargain. I'll take stock of my wardrobe in January and want I think I need I'll try to buy in the sales. I really love Jane Norman stuff and their sales are brilliant (50-70% off). I only shop there in the sales though, the rest of the time I'm a New Look girl. The only thing I'm not decided on is Machine Washable suits. I don't do dry cleaning. What are your thoughts on stocking up on these? Do UK machine washable suits wash ok in Canadian Washing Machines? Can you buy Machine Washable suits out there? And do people tend to wear suites in offices that much anyway? |

The George range at Walmart is definitely not as appealing as George at Asda in the UK. I agree with the other posters about bras but I also find it difficult to find any attractive sweaters or cardigans as they are all 1950s styling or the colours are all wrong ie bubble gum pink.

I just wear plain thin jumpers in the winter, and there was no timeless plain stuff here that wasn't acrylic. The ones made of decent wool had rubbish like flowers or polar bears or glittery bits on them - *spit* I missed M&S then. |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
Everyone knows my problems with Canadian bra purchasing, so I'm not really going to go there :o
I'd totally stock up on Scrundies, especially if you're not an A, B or C cup. I think there's only one place in Toronto that sells reasonably priced bras with larger cup sizes and small back sizes. A couple of weeks ago I bought 2 bras and matching pants in my size and the bill came to an eye watering $400... Especially so as I know that one of the makes costs 75% less in the UK. This is a favourite rant of mine, and long may it continue. What I do is buy masses of the frilly stuff everytime I go back to the UK. I wouldn't touch M & S underwear stuff when I lived in the UK, but these days it's my idea of heaven... PF- very particular about her smalls... or not so smalls :) |

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
I have been stocking up on my bras, have bought about 7 in the last couple of months. Still need to get a couple of strapless ones, but then they are always a pain to get as they aren't designed to be comfy.
I have been shopping in Calgary a couple of times and did get some reasonably priced stuff from Winners and Le Chateau but most of the other shops seemed expensive. I though perhaps I just didn't know where to look. I'm definitely thinking I need to go shopping in the end of summer sales and the January sales. |
Re: To Buy or Not to Buy - Ladies Fashion
Ok then ladies, here`s a new question:
If we have stocked up on undies, woolly jumpers and thongs, how much do we have to dish out for things like nail extensions a decent cut & blow dry and/or colour on our hair? What about the trips to the beauty salon for eye brow tints, leg/bikini line waxing! If its costing loads for the undies and clothing i dread to think how much the above mentioned will cost  Could permanent hair removal be the answer????:rofl::rofl::rofl: Sue x :) |
