I suppose it wouldn't be any more artery-clogging than Poutine.

My boyfriend wants to take a 'wonderbar' the next time we are in Scotland and ask the chip shop man to fry that up for him! I think I'll pass on that though!

THE CHIPPIE is at westney/highway2. Westney heights plaza.
It was really nice to have fish and chips that were not smothered in a thick coat of batter. It was very thin and crispy. Very yummie!
the way things are going i think we will all end up in the chippie at the same time.
I really want a good place for BANGERS AND MASH?
any suggestions?
Oh! yes and a pint of caffreys!
cheers everyone

Going back to the fish and chips chinwag, the missus and i were in Mississauga over the weekend, and we had the best fish and chips since i moved to this country.
The place is called FISHERMAN'S PLAICE, its on 32-3105 unity drive mississauga ONT. TEL: 905-820-7697. They had cod fish ( my favourite ) and others with chips for $5:95.
The fish was lightly coated with batter and the chips were semi-fluffy, its probably the best i have had in the GTA, but then i haven't tried all yet

well I am glad I have 2 happy customers
when I go, 2 of us, we order 2 fish and one chip.. it's enough
I noticed sometimes they have whitefish.. or at least I thought they did.. which is a nice alternative to halibut (I dont like haddock)
there is also a fish and chip place at parkwoods mall.. thats at parkwoods village drive.. (the street that changes names 3 times.. it starts as york mills.. going east.. turns into parkwoods, then turns into ellesmere just past victoria park... in Don Mills...)
401/dvp.. look it up on a map if you dont get what I am saying..
it's called the Tasty Bite.. its a small strip mall as well.. family run.

There is one in the Beach in Toronto and one on Yonge Street just around the corner from the Bay.
P.S I read somewhere that British chocolate has a sell by date and North American stuff doesn't...what does that tell you?!

I second this. The Nutty Chocolatier has quite a good selection of English chocolate and Walker's crisps etc. Well worth a visit.

Hello there,
I third this
This place is the canine's testicles, the first time i tried them out, was at niagara-on-the-lake, flippin' good they were. I was also at conachs ( www.abitofhome.com ) during the weekend getting my supply of ready salted walkers crisps, someone needs to tell them to get a bigger store though, that one room thing is not doing it.

Can anyone tell me where to find a good sausage?

The sausage is to a brit as a steak is to a canadian!

i guess i am used to the sausage!
simple country girl!
well! not so simple.
i want bangers and mash
it is just like being a teenager again and having to learn to cook from scratch. Tough at time!
cheers

Helloooo - been here in Winnipeg now for 2 and a bit weeks and we're all lurving it - even the son loves his school, now there's a thing! And what was so exciting was discovering cream crackers, aero bars, smarties, PG Tips and real live curry sauces and poppadoms in Safeways - bliss!! Now, to top off our excitement we stopped off at the Sugar Mountain near town to stock up on sweeties as treats for mum and dad (me and 'im) for Easter. Couldn't believe our luck - fry's chocolate cream, curly wurly, double decker, liquorice allsorts - you name it we grabbed it - and to finish off a perfect day we had English style fish and chips from the freezer section which was made with vinegar batter - feel a little 'ick now but definitely very, very happy
Oh yeah - and there's even a HMV store, 7 Eleven and Co-op within walking distance - just like being home really

I'd suggest getting a list of the highland games for the summer and making sure you go to them.
Am not sure where they all are now--I came here at 11 and my Dad got me involved with the pipeband scene and am telling you, going to the gamies every Saturday for the summer was just awesome.
Candy is expensive sort of but worth it. Can get the Edinburgh Rock, and the sherbit with the lollie inside, and the little chocolate biscuits we used to have with tea. Can also get the polos and the winegums and the jellie babies and barley sugars and the fruit gums and the curly wurlies and probably, since you guys mostly sound like your from the Toronto area, will also get their cards and numbers/locations of where their stores are. These are usually 'British Import Stores" and so the stuff they are selling is origional. Chocolate there as well, but more so in the actual shops rather than at the gamies since the sun tends to melt it pretty fast. These places sell the drop scones my mom used to make and the potatoe scones too which is nice
As for fish and chips--I, too, wander where the newspaper was. Remembered how it was behind the chippy on the way home from school the boys would goggle over the pics in the daily sun or mirror that were discarded behind the shop.
Paddy o Flaherties in our area (Sarnia) has excellent irish food and a darn good cider. Am not too much into beer and stuff but they do serve guinuss or whateveritscalled there. Also, most towns have a British-Canadian club around there somewhere where darts and such are played and the nice thing there is you come into contact with other natives in the area who may know of more of the local spots--the places where because the owner is British or the cook is British, the plowmans lunch is actually a plowmans lunch or the shepherds pie doesn't come served with corn in it or something.
If you are lucky of course and are in the Victoria area--B.C. Canada you will find the English Sweet shop which actually has the rhubarb and custards I used to like as a kid--and all sorts of little tea shops which sell real pork pies and real sausage rolls. Those are what I miss here--real sausage rolls and pork pies. Vancouver area has them as well, little tea shops all over the place especially on Granville Island and over the ferry there.
Of course, one of you guys could like open up a nice little place with the garden out back with the little swing. Serve real lemonade, and Tizer (Tizer, Irn Brew or whatever, and the clear cream soda is also sold in the AP in the 'ethnic foods' aisle btw), and cider and snowballs and even make a real shandy. Then make sure to let us know because we will all want to visit there at some point in time. :P

I don't know for sure where you'd get an English banger but I'd bet a good place to look around would be Toronto's St Lauwrence market (open every day except Sunday) which has zillions of butchers in it.
European Meats in Kensington Market may also have it. If not they certainly have every other sausage known to humanity so you'll come away with something interesting.
In the meantime, as you probably know, what is called here "breakfast sausage" is not a bad substitute. They taste somewhat the same as an English sausage, but they're small chipolatas.
There is an organic Irish butcher in Oakville but that's an opposite suburb to yours.
