To me, a good fish and chips looks something like the pic below, nice cod fish with some fluffy chips with a bit of vinegar in it

Yummy

I still think the best is when they are in newspaper and soaked in viniger......... seeping through the bottom onto your hand.

The best of british fish and chips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CAN I HAVE HALF A LAGER TOPS WITH THAT?

okay , please keep in mind that I find that ajax and chips is a good one.. however.. I am not british.. hey, its worth a try.. they do have haddock too I believe if you prefer.. I just dont recall what made fish and chips in england different from the cdn batch..

there is a store in scarb town center called london fish and chips.. I cant imagine they would be great, but ya never know..

and as for the chocolate, its presidents choice chocolate. .forgot to mention the name.. its just a little different.. eatons used to import some, but sadly, they are no longer..

good luck..

Hi,

I moved from the UK 3 years ago... You are right Canadian chocolate just is not the same as British chocolate. I found a website last year, based in Missisauga that sell everything English from choccies to Ready Brek to Billy Connolly videos !!! They even sell selection boxes at Christmastime!!
Check it out, they deliver to your door, I guarantee you will be in heaven just looking at their website. Needless to say I am a very regular customer !!!
As for the fish and chips I have tried them out here and there is NOTHING even close to fish and chips from the chippy!! I am going back for a visit this August and that will be my first meal and a good old fashioned doner kebab will be my second !!! Hope this helps. FYI I live in Manitoba.
Happy eating!!

The website address is : www.abitofhome.ca

See...am glad am not the only one that thinks that about the fish and chips round here. Canadians that have never been to blighty, or those that have been back home for god knows when, will not know what we are talking about.

I will even go near what they call Kebobs round here. Give me a good chicken kebab with chilli sauce on it in a paper anyday from good old blighty.

I know that store in mississauga, its just a few minutes drive from my office. I think i will pop in for some crisp today, ready salted walkers crisp
Yummy

My local Zehr's and A&P have decent cheeses - Wensleydale, Cheshire and Lancashire. They are a bit pricey though.

I'm on the lookout for Pickled Onion Monster Munch!! If anyone finds 'em available online lemme know please! I actually dreamt about them last night(maybe I shouldn't be posting that lol )

Oops I found em at www.abitofhome.ca but they're out of stock! argh!!!

Hi again,

I found marmite in our local Safeways, as well as Crosse & Blackwell Branston Pickle and salad cream !!! I miss the english food soo much, the only thing I want that I haven't been able to buy over here in stores or online is Lucozade and Bisto gravy granules!!! As for bangers and mash, and kebabs etc I have given up on my quest as after 3 years I haven't found anything remotely close to the wonderful tasting food in the UK. I was seriously thinking about opening an English restaurant so I can make REAL Cornish Pasties and Toad in the hole, shepherds pie etc...hmmm maybe will think about it some more..

I managed to find one stall in a flea market in Pickering. they just seem so expensive.

I am desperatly trying to work on my 13 year old son to convince him that the future is much brighter here!

there must be other parents that understand the value of a choccie bar!

Sorry, everyone!..... but Canadian chocolate is not the same at all.
I still love Canada!!!!!!!!

help mothers desperate plea?

Hi there fellow chocoholic!!!!

I was in Ontario last year before I moved here and vowed I would never buy another bar of chocolate from Canada ever again!! I even swear the likes of twix taste different!!!!! That was until I moved to Nova Scotia. Theres a store here just outside of Halifax called petes frootique. It was started by a guy from Nottingham who was a greengrocer and he is now a multi millionaire. Now I know its a bit of a trek for you even by Canadian standards but if you go to his website you can email the store for whatever you like. His site is

http://www.petesfrootique.com/shop_online.asp

Happy chocolate eating!!!

I didn`t realise ol` Pete had a website, I shall check that out. He does the evening thing on ATV?

There used to be a Pete`s Frootique here in Moncton, but it moved to Shediac a while back.

I don't know exactly where you live but......

There is a Place in Hamilton called
Connaught Fish & Chips
976 Main Street East,
Hamilton, ON
L8M 1M8

This is the absolute closest I ever came to British fish and chips. and their Mushy peas are good as well.

Not perfect but close!!

Sorry about the last post. I've just signed up and had trouble posting a reply.....didn't realize I had to subscribe to the forum first.

Ok, I'll try again.

I've noticed that no-one has ever mentioned St. Andrews Fish & Chips at Brimley and Ellesmere in Scarborough. They have been around for a long time and were still there this time last year. Also, next door there is a Scottish butchers/bakers and I'm sure you can get chocolate there but I do suspect they will be expensive.

And yes, British Chocolate is best but I still say my favourite is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups!

Another good Website for english sweets (Especially the ones you don't see much anymore ) is:

http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/

I'm not sure about posting them to Canada but it's worth a try !

Hello there,

Welcome back and happy St Paddy's Day How is good ol' Loughton eh? Woodford, Theydon Bois, grage hill, and all that? I like it round there, and was going to buy my flat there, before settling for the docklands.

Do you still get all those soap stars living round there? I know Brian harvey (E17) lives round there, because i was at a party at his house once. The close proximity with london is the good thing about it, and you got the central line running straight up west.

I was back there last August, and it still looked good round there. I lived in Leyton for a while, while at UNI. So you reckon this Chipie is alright then? I know Hamilton very well, i'll give it a go next time am in that area.
