dear all,
I am currently waiting for my residency, and I want to work as a chef, I was brought up in a fish and chip shop as a young lad living in nottingham, I would dearly love to open up a traditional "chippy" but I think a lot of the problems that we are suffering is that one of getting hold of what is needed to make traditional fish and chips fish alone seems difficult as for the potatoes canada as never heard of "maris piper or King edwards" as far as I can tell. I have yet to find a decent chippy that actually peels the potatoes and the chips are chunky enough to give some taste to them
Regarding the wish for british goods There is a place in Nova scotia ran by a gentlemen called pete luckett (food network) maybe he could run a mail order service on things like birds custard etc
oh and regarding the fish and chip taste Canola oil or shortening cannot replace good old beef dripping to cook yr fish and chips in
regards to all

Hi,

I moved from the UK 3 years ago... You are right Canadian chocolate just is not the same as British chocolate. I found a website last year, based in Missisauga that sell everything English from choccies to Ready Brek to Billy Connolly videos !!! They even sell selection boxes at Christmastime!!
Check it out, they deliver to your door, I guarantee you will be in heaven just looking at their website. Needless to say I am a very regular customer !!!
As for the fish and chips I have tried them out here and there is NOTHING even close to fish and chips from the chippy!! I am going back for a visit this August and that will be my first meal and a good old fashioned doner kebab will be my second !!! Hope this helps. FYI I live in Manitoba.
Happy eating!!

The website address is : www.abitofhome.ca

also, I have purchased the big slab of chocolate at loblaws/no frills.. it tastes pretty good to me.. (I am canadian though..) I have enjoyed many a british cadburys in my day .. so if thats what you need..

also, some deli's believe it or not stock belgian chocolate.. is that close?

and.. what type of fish is the best?? I love this spot in ajax. I prefer halibut and I am not sure if they cook it the way brits like it.. but man, tasty.. good portions.. Halibut Time at Westney and hwy 2. I dont want to make anyone drive all that way, but if you are in the area.. they actually do good chips and fish.. I always find you get one without the other..

especially chocolate?

I managed to find one stall in a flea market in Pickering. they just seem so expensive.
I know the booth you are speaking of and unfortunately those are pretty much the going prices for real British foods here. A couple of other places in the area you can try are the But and Ben Scottish bakery on Kingston Road just west of Whites Road (strip mall across from the Payless Drugs) also in Pickering and another Scottish bakery (forget the name) in Eglinton Square on the corner of Pharmacy Ave. and Eglinton Ave. (they are near the food court toward the back of the mall). The one in Eglinton Square has the larger selection, but both have chocolates in addition to the baked goods.

My husband also said that the Cadbury store in the downtown Bay store almost always has the English Cadbury stuff in addition to the locally made things.

See the thing is, everyone comes up saying they had a nice one here and there, and they turn out not to be be brits or people that can tell a good fish and chips.

I'll defintely try that one in Ajax when am in that neck of the woods. The worst ones have had though, were in Cambridge, i was throwing up for two days
Sorry I'm a bit late joining in on this one, but the ONLY place in Ontario where I have found REAL fish & chips is the Erie Bell pub in Kincardine, on Lake Huron. Very nice Guinness there as well!
And I am English, in Ontario 5 years.

Check out the Nutty Chocolatier, they have lots of British chocolate and sweets (and even Irn Bru!!) I badgered my boyfriend into getting me an imported selection box for Christmas and I'm still working on the imported easter egg!!

There is one in the Beach in Toronto and one on Yonge Street just around the corner from the Bay.

P.S I read somewhere that British chocolate has a sell by date and North American stuff doesn't...what does that tell you?!

I was just going to suggest The Nutty Chocolatier, and was all excited that nobody else had posted it - until I saw that :P

Anyway, I took a trip to Scotland last March and got hooked on Yorkies and everything else. I then came to Peterborough, Ontario to check out the university and found this little chocolate store downtown: The Nutty Chocolatier. They had pretty much everything I had been missing since my trip to Scotland!

Apparently there are a couple stores in the Toronto area, and one in Peterborough. I'm sure there are more in other locations as well. Maybe they have a website?

Did you try Irn Bru when you were in Scotland? Or what about the deep-fried mars bar?!!

Us Scots really know how to look after our health/teeth!

Yeah, my friends and I tried just about everything while we were there. We didn't care much for haggis or fish, so we stuck to eating "crisps" and candy, and drinking Irn-Bru, Tizer, Tango, etc. Oh, and Lilt. I love Lilt. I slowly became a Lilt addict.. they need to sell that over here

I didn't actually have a deep-fried Mars bar while I was in Scotland. Sometime last summer, though, a Scottish immigrant opened up a restaurant in Kingston, where I'm originally from. He had a bunch of "normal" Canadian/American foods on his menu, but there was one thing that stood out... the deep-fried Mars bar over vanilla ice cream. My friend and I had to share one of those, and I've gotta say, it was the BEST thing I've ever tasted.

It was actually kind of ironic that you mentioned that, though. I spent some time a couple days ago looking for a recipe so that I could make one for my husband (he's in the US and I'm waiting for a visa) while I'm visiting next week. He's a little frightened by the idea, but I'll make him try it. I'll make myself one with a Snickers bar, too

Oh, and from those recipes.. I read that you guys sometimes have it over some chips. Is that true? It might be something... different... to try

I suppose it wouldn't be any more artery-clogging than Poutine.
