dear all,
I am currently waiting for my residency, and I want to work as a chef, I was brought up in a fish and chip shop as a young lad living in nottingham, I would dearly love to open up a traditional "chippy" but I think a lot of the problems that we are suffering is that one of getting hold of what is needed to make traditional fish and chips fish alone seems difficult as for the potatoes canada as never heard of "maris piper or King edwards" as far as I can tell. I have yet to find a decent chippy that actually peels the potatoes and the chips are chunky enough to give some taste to them
Regarding the wish for british goods There is a place in Nova scotia ran by a gentlemen called pete luckett (food network) maybe he could run a mail order service on things like birds custard etc
oh and regarding the fish and chip taste Canola oil or shortening cannot replace good old beef dripping to cook yr fish and chips in
regards to all

I would be the first at the front door if you ever opened a restraunt. I'm not a bad cook myself but i struggle with finding proper ingredients.
did i ever have fun with the kids when i first made fairy cakes!!!!
more like rock cakes. I thought it was self raising flour.
so funny!!
live and learn.
Sometimes it is like i have to learn to cook all over again.
fish and chips in newspaper with vinigar!!!!!

Hi,
I moved from the UK 3 years ago... You are right Canadian chocolate just is not the same as British chocolate. I found a website last year, based in Missisauga that sell everything English from choccies to Ready Brek to Billy Connolly videos !!! They even sell selection boxes at Christmastime!!
Check it out, they deliver to your door, I guarantee you will be in heaven just looking at their website. Needless to say I am a very regular customer !!!
As for the fish and chips I have tried them out here and there is NOTHING even close to fish and chips from the chippy!! I am going back for a visit this August and that will be my first meal and a good old fashioned doner kebab will be my second !!! Hope this helps. FYI I live in Manitoba.
Happy eating!!

My husband also said that the Cadbury store in the downtown Bay store almost always has the English Cadbury stuff in addition to the locally made things.

Hello there,
Where did you say you found the best fish and chips, and does it at least come close to what we know? Am not expecting it to come in a paper
Address please if you don't mind

Check out the Nutty Chocolatier, they have lots of British chocolate and sweets (and even Irn Bru!!) I badgered my boyfriend into getting me an imported selection box for Christmas and I'm still working on the imported easter egg!!
There is one in the Beach in Toronto and one on Yonge Street just around the corner from the Bay.
P.S I read somewhere that British chocolate has a sell by date and North American stuff doesn't...what does that tell you?!

I was just going to suggest The Nutty Chocolatier, and was all excited that nobody else had posted it - until I saw that :P
Anyway, I took a trip to Scotland last March and got hooked on Yorkies and everything else. I then came to Peterborough, Ontario to check out the university and found this little chocolate store downtown: The Nutty Chocolatier. They had pretty much everything I had been missing since my trip to Scotland!
Apparently there are a couple stores in the Toronto area, and one in Peterborough. I'm sure there are more in other locations as well. Maybe they have a website?

I didn't actually have a deep-fried Mars bar while I was in Scotland. Sometime last summer, though, a Scottish immigrant opened up a restaurant in Kingston, where I'm originally from. He had a bunch of "normal" Canadian/American foods on his menu, but there was one thing that stood out... the deep-fried Mars bar over vanilla ice cream. My friend and I had to share one of those, and I've gotta say, it was the BEST thing I've ever tasted.
It was actually kind of ironic that you mentioned that, though. I spent some time a couple days ago looking for a recipe so that I could make one for my husband (he's in the US and I'm waiting for a visa) while I'm visiting next week. He's a little frightened by the idea, but I'll make him try it. I'll make myself one with a Snickers bar, too

Oh, and from those recipes.. I read that you guys sometimes have it over some chips. Is that true? It might be something... different... to try
I suppose it wouldn't be any more artery-clogging than Poutine.
