Dunno 'bout you but something terrifyingly suicidal about spending a day with my head popping into an oven... maybe I need to cut back on the horror films now
Or you can just buy those thick aluminium foil tray things that just sit in the bottom of the oven till you toss them for just a couple of bucks a pack.

Iaink, which supermarkets please, as I haven't seen them around here? And I know most recipes say add salt, but I tend to ignore that bit...I'm not a salt fan, and my husband has had to get used to adding it later!! Never had a recipe go wrong without it! Bought baking powder yesterday, it has added salt already!
Trish...your quantaties worked fine with my sponge cake....thank you.

Sorry Souv I just can't resist!!

I spent 6 hours this past weekend cleaning the gas BBQ for the first time since we bought it in May (and trust me, we USE it at every op!), these supposed "Magic, spray on BBQ/grill and magically everything wipes off" TV adds for this CILLIT BANG by Barry Scott (sorry but Barry always shouts it) is a LIE... a LIE I TELL THEE. Had to chuck the frazzled scouring pad in the bin and my BBQ still is black & rusty... enough to make me wanna cry

Have you tried Easy Off? Worked a treat on my oven when I moved into a yucky rental and the oven hadn't been cleaned ...ever! Just spray it on, go and do something else for ahlf an hour and wipe off. If it doesn't all come off first time, just repeat.

What a great idea! Self cleaning ovens are another lie! I'm all for less scrubbing!

Do you leave it on high for 10mins or so after you are done cooking in order to burn off all the debris? Then you just need to give it a quick scrub to remove the grey residue.

That keeps the top clean, and you just have to remember to drain the drip tray occasionaly then.

Rust on the grill part sucks, you might have to replace it or face sticking food problems.

Oven cleaner and a hoze would probably work too, but you need to make sure the burners are not left wet or else rust might eat them. Covering it in the winter might help extend the life a bit too.

Do they have it in the UK? I thought Cillit Bang was the most powerful cleaner (according to BARRY SCOTT) you can get here? Would oven cleaners work the same for Gas BBQ's?

Should have, its no secret, just a strong alkali (wear gloves when you use it) that basically converts fat to soap. Not sure what it will do to a zinc die cast BBQ body...it might corrode it, so read the instructions / warnings first.

You mean people actually clean BBQs? I didn't know that. All I do is whack it on high heat for a bit and then attack the grill with a wire brush.

For optimal efficency, fill the tray with beans. That way the bottom of the oven/bbq stays clean and you get barbecued beans with flavour.

Cool, but do you still get that nice charred effect from the dripping fat firing up and broiling the underside of the meat?

I had a brick BBQ in the UK and NEVER cleaned it!!
Whenever I used it I'd just wop a load of coals on with tons of lighter gel and fire up the towering inferno to burn all the crap off it!!!!
