I have met many people that call themselves vegetarian but still eat fish/eggs/milk/cheese as a way of getting protein, they have told me it's only vegans that don't - so forgive me if I have misunderstood since the first day I ever found out that there were people out there that didn't eat meat. So no not good news really and still stuck for meal ideas - maybe you don't have any?

Sorry Piff Poff I really didn't mean to sound rude:o For me as a vegetarian (not a vegan) I don't eat anything that once walked, swam or crawled. If you're looking for veggie recipes check out Canadian living Magazine's website they have quite a few good suggestion.:) Be thankful she still eats dairy products cooking for my vegan OH is even more of a challenge.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions - this has been a complete nightmare for me as I'm so worried she's not eating the right balance of food - in fact she's probably eating the healthiest out of all of us - even if her mercury levels are getting dangerously high from the amount of tuna and salmon:rofl: I wish I had my own personal chef to cook me diet foods:rolleyes:I have said if she wants to become a vegan she wil have to wait until she is an adult a nd has left home, I think I would understand her choice more if I had a better answer than 'Taylor says', but as it is her choice I want as a Mum to provide the best healthy meals possible. Cheese pizza tonight - she's a happy bunny:thumbsup:
With any luck she'll take an interest in cooking for herself and give you a break. |

Hi,
Does anybody know anyone who's vegetarian in Canada? We are hoping to get our PR through soon and I'm vegetarian along with my daughter. Will we be seen as strange in Canada? Not worried for myself but worried for my daughter I want her to fit in, do schools offer a choice of meals or will it be packed lunch everyday? We visited Niagara recently and when we told a waitress we were vegetarian her chin hit the floor, although she did her best to accommodate us. It seemed a bit like the UK 15 years ago. Any insight would be appreciated. :) Try this link: http://www.communitynaturalfoods.com/ and this: http://www.calgaryveg.com/ There's also the many farmers markets in and around Calgary to look at. Yes - it's a packed lunch every day. There might be links to these already - I didn't read the whole thread. |

Re: Any vegetarians in Canada?
There are all sorts of names these days but this is my understanding
Vegetarian is someone who doesn't eat meat or fish but will eat dairy products Vegan is someone who doesn't eat meat, fish or animal and dairy products includes honey, eggs etc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism My dh will eat eggs and dairy products but will not touch meat, poultry, fish or shell food. i generally eat the same as him as I am not going to cook different meals but I do eat poultry on occasions as well as shell fish but generally if we go out for a meal Did used to take me ages to shop when we first arrived in Canada due to checking the labels but know have a good idea on what I am buying so I don't check the labels as much now but do tend to buy the same stuff. I also cook more here in Canada so have more control over what is put in it. One thing I do miss is not being able to buy veggie jelly but my mum bless her next month when she visits is bringing me plenty :) |

That's funny. With any luck she'll take an interest in cooking for herself and give you a break. I think I might start doing a couple of meat free meals a week for the whole family anyway - just to make life a little easier and healthier. |

Because I'm being more conscious of what she is eating and trying to make sure she is getting enough of all the food groups, whereas we are just eating crap as usual:blink:
hah! Not likely - too lazy and messy:eek: I think I might start doing a couple of meat free meals a week for the whole family anyway - just to make life a little easier and healthier. I'm a vegetarian purely out of taste/texture dislike of meat, so tend not to get too picky over the whole grill sharing thing. On that note - A&W's have a good veggie burger, swiss chalet do a reasonable one, montana's do a really good one, boston pizza has a few veggie choices (although they've got rid of the best one - spinach, garlic and feta). Extreme pita and subway are also pretty good although you do get strange looks when they realise you don't want any meat. |
