Hi NordyandSharpy
I was reading your thread and thought I'd get in touch. My family and I are moving over from Kent at the beginning of February. Yay. We got all our visas sorted out in advance but it has just occurred to me that we didn't get any for our pets! We have a border collie called Doctor Squidgy Squidge pants (or 'the Doctor' for short and a black lab called Muffymuffkins. (silly names I know)
Was just wondering if we need to get visas for them and if so which kind. As I mentioned, one of our dogs is a border collie so was thinking he'd need a work visa, ut for Muffymuffkins I'm not so sure?? Maybe the family reunification?? Anyway, if you could let me know that would be fantastic. Kind Regards, Ron

Dude, are you serious? (names wise) ha ha

Dogs don't need Visa's, we're lookin into moving and from what i've found from our vet and on this forum it seems that the easiest way is a "dog passport" our vet said it costs about £120 per dog and thats including rabies jabs! Speak to your vet, they'll give the best advice and apparently air canada will take them as excess baggage for about £250 (whether this is per dog or not i'm not sure! But probably is!)

Hope you get "the doctor" and Muffy sorted
Dom

Hi Dom, thanks for the quick response. Ahh, that's great news, was slightly worried I might have to drop them both off at the dog's home (just joking haha).
Dog passport's hey - oh dear, I'd best give Poochyperms a call then as Muffymuffkins will definitely need to get her fringe trimmed if she's going to look her best in the passport photograph.
In regards to taking them on the plane, do you know if they go underneath the plane with the baggage or can you put them in the overhead compartment? Sorry if these are silly questions, but we've never done this before. Will be my first time on a plane in February so am slightly nervous.
Thanks, Ron

As long as you've listed them as dependents on your application you shouldn;t have a problem gettiing them in, though Dr. Squidgy will have to write another exam over here if he wants to practice medicine. Unless of course he is a docor of Psychology or Psychiatry, then he should be okay - we'll take anyone we can get. Yes, get Muffy down to poochy perms and make sure she doesn't smile in the photo, as the passport office will refuse it and it will delay the who process for you. ;)And unless they are 'handbag dogs' (if you manage to carry them as such!), they probably will have to go in the cargo of the plane.

I have no 1st hand experience importing dogs. Vampire bats, yes, but dogs - no. That's another story though. In all seriousness though, I think it is a relatively simple process bringing a dog from the UK to Canada than the other way around. I know if you wanted to send a dog home, it would have to be quarantined because rabies does occur over here but is practically non-existant in Europe. Also - see your vet before coming, as he/she might give you some sedatives for the dogs to help them cope with the flight. Different dogs respond to flying differently, but expect them to be a bit out of sorts for a couple days after the flight, but they should settle down in not too long.

Good luck and i hope the arrangements go well!

Yeah, like Nordy and sharpey say, make sure her fringe isn't covering her face too, our neighbours had a passport refused cos their 2 year olds fringe covered her face.

I think from what i've read, there's other ways to get dogs over there, a search on the threads should throw up some answers, but pet passport seems the best and cheapest way i've heard about.

With regards the rabies thing.. they will have a rabies jab before you go and CAN'T return to England for 6 months but as long as this has passed before you go etc, it shouldn't be a problem taking them back and forth with no quarantine as the jab makes them immune.. You may need to keep up-to-date with it after a few years and get boosters, but you'd probably do that anyway to save them gettin rabies while you're there?

Hi NordyandSharpey and Dom,
Thanks so much for the passport advice - much appreciated. I never would have thought that dogs could get a passport! How crazy.
Since dogs can get them, I was just wondering what other animals are eligible. We currently have a Hamster called Grooverider and a chinchilla called Goodnight Cilla Black. Could they get passports too? Initially, I was going to leave them with my mother in law, but the kids would be distraught at the thought of leaving them behind. Would be great if we could take them all on the plane with us, although I'm not sure if we'd need to get them an extra seat or not???
Let me know what you think,
Thanks, Ron

Ron, are you Chris's brother?

Not sure about hamsters or chinchilla's... maybe if you start a new thread i'm sure people have taken all sorts of animals and they can advise you better? Plus, i'm sure it would be informative for others looking at moving abroad when you get answers!..

If you're not sure about what animals can get passports try visiting www.canmydaftpetgetapassport.co.uk very good site (i think that's the address anyway)

You might struggle getting the chinchilla & hamster passports, as i had great difficulty getting my vampire bats over, and they are similar type of animals are they not? You could, however, smuggle them on the plane. See if you can contact Richard Gere about this, as I've heard he knows interesting ways to transport small, furry rodents. I wouldn't advise leaving them with your mother-in-law as they might start to think that she is their mom and that you are distant relatives. And then when you try to explain that you are in fact their real family, it could end in disaster - mainly, you all ending up on the Jerry Springer show. Chinchillas tend to be extremely sensitive, so I wouldn't advice inflicting this kind of trauma. Best just to cut your losses and adopt them out full stop. Now if you had a chimp or gorilla to bring over, that would be a completely different story. And yes, you would need to buy another seat on the plane. And probably ask the air hostess for extra nuts.

Hi!
My husband (Adam) had an interview with an architects practice based in Edmonton on Saturday and they have offered him a job! I'm 28 and my husband is 29, we currently both live in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire although my husband is from Kent originally. It's all happening rather fast, Adam emailed through his CV last Wednesday and by coincidence they were at an event in London on Saturday so meet up for a chat then - and offered him a job on the spot. It's great but means decisions need to be made and I'm not very good at them - can't decide what colour to paint the walls when faced with a few options, never mind making life changing decisions like this!! As someone who has recently been through the experience and has re located to the same area any advice would be much appreciated x
