Another E-petition gets almost the same negative response

Today 10 Downing Street responded to a petition that closed on 11 June 2008 from Roy and Joan Brentnall of Canada. It asked the Prime Minister to remove the discrimination against British State pensioners who retire to the Commonwealth countries rather than Europe or the USA. It has taken over 60 days to produce a response.

It is largely a copy and paste version of what was given to a petition on January third of this year. Perhaps as a signal of the priority given to UK pensioners, even the copy and pasting created an unintelligible sentence.

Meanwhile 10 Downing Street is now Twittering, another attention-getting activity to take them away from the real priorities.

May I be the first to suggest that there's no injustice here? If British pensioners living in Canada would like their pensions index linked they should move elsewhere. Furthermore, the British public is never going to be receptive to the idea of paying more to people who have voluntarily left, not to say abandoned, their country.

This argument is like marital sex, it's all a bit rote but there's still some fun in it.

Re: Another E-petition gets almost the same negative response

The discrimination against UK pensioners in Commonwealth countries in freezing pensions at retirement age levels is grossly unfair. I live in Langley BC, Canada. If I had chosen to live in Bellingham, Washington, USA just 40 miles away or 1 hour by car, then I would be receiving exactly the same pension treatment as if I still lived in the UK. Equally if I had travelled east rather than west and lived in Berlin, Germany, at almost the same latitude as Langley, then I would be receiving exactly the same pension treatment as if I still lived in the UK.

To the OP.

You have 20 posts on this website and everyone of them is complaining about this perceived injustice.

Have you nothing else going on in your life or is this topic all encompassing?

So, if the pension indexing is very important to you, move to Bellingham or Berlin or Birmingham.

With all of the boomers retiring and, given the sad state of pension funds and savings in general, they are more likely to stop indexing-linking the countries that are, rather than index link those that are not.

Man, you gotta love single-issue fanatics!

If I were PM I'd offer to give the index-linked rise to everyone, but only on the proviso that they collect their pensions in person at a UK Post Office every Tuesday morning.

Otherwise shut the f*** up and be grateful you're able to collect anything. It's more than most of us who are still years off pension age will ever get.

This petition, complete with the glaring spelling mistake, was a private initiative but at least someone tried to do something on your behalf. So don't knock them. The Canadian Alliance of British Pensioners, of which I am the N.S. coordinator, is also fighting this blatent discrimination and has been doing so since 2005. The case is to be heard in the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg later this year. According to our legal team we have a very strong case and there is every reason to believe that we will win and that the UK government will be forced to rectify this situation. Annual increases are usually in the region of 3% to 5% and this adds up over the years. I can only urge everyone, regardless of age, to check out the CABP website. There is a link from this site <www.britishpensions.com>. It is in the interest of EVERYONE who has worked in UK to do so because you have a vested interest. We are totally volunteer organization and there are no hidden agendas. The stated aim of CABP is to overturn this ripoff. Membership is just $20 a year and for that you get your name on the docket at TCofHR, a quarterly publication outlining changes and other items of interest and lots of expert advice on claiming and maximizing you future state pension. There are imminent changes to the criteria for buying back years and you should all check these out so that you can maximize you State Pension at minimum cost. You've paid for it and you are entitled to it. All we want is this discrimination to end. Please join us and help us to put a stop to this. You may think that pension information is only for old folks but the younger you are the easier it will be to maximize you entitlement by buying more years. It's easy to say pull out the popcorn etc. However, it's your entitlement and apathy won't help. CABP is working for all UK state pension recipients, present and future.

It would be very much in your interest. There will be big changes in April 2010 and depending on the class of contribution you can make you might be very surprised at what you will recieve. Chaeck it out.

Why don't you campaign to end index linking for all pensioners abroard and perhaps also those in the UK? This would address the perceived injustice and is more likely to be accepted by the government and the public at large.

It was a joke for goodness sake.

I have no intention of claiming something I left 45 years ago.

I have no wish to sponge off the UK.

Some would. I know a couple who came to Canada 53 years ago after contributing for about 4 years, and they are the biggest complainers regarding the non index linking. They must have paid about a shilling a week in National Insurance contributions at that time and they have had that back many times over.

I too know a couple who upon hearing that others were getting something/anything they would apply too in the hopes of cashing in.

It's not like they needed it, they ran a successful business in Edmonton and retired to Vancouver Island, pathetic really.

Frankly I wish they would pay the index linking in the name of equality, but I know its not worth having a stroke over.

Anyway, Ive been waiting in the wings of the forum for something new and or interesting to come up, and it hasnt, so I guess this could well be my "YAGE" post. But who knows, I might pop back in from time to time, but nothing like in the past. Good luck!

Does that prove the mismanagement of the pension funds?

Pensions should not be funded by current and future taxpayers but from the returns on the money invested by those who contributed.

That's not how state pensions work, is it? It's not invested money as such, it's just paid out of general taxation.

BWelford Aug 13th 2008 8:10 am

Re: Another E-petition gets almost the same negative response

Pensions are paid out of the National Insurance Fund, which has a huge surplus, which is used for other purposes than pensions although it was funded by all those pensioners contributions. You can find more information at the Pension Parity UK website at http://www.pension-parity-uk.com/home. If you go to the relevant page on the National Insurance Fund, you will be outraged at what you see there.
