No, because the surrendered license is in the hands of the Alberta licensing people??

I think you are reading into this a bit too much??

I hold a UK, NZ and an Albertan license.... If I drive in the UK I use the UK one, in NZ the NZ one, and in Canada the Alberta one... If I hire a car in the US I present my Alberta license as you receive a lower rate as coming from another right-side-of-the-road country.... I am legally licensed to drive in each of these countries so why can I not hold each license??

The spirit of the single license law is that you cannot simultaneously hold a license from more than one province (to avaoid bans, etc), but due to it's wording means that you end up having to hand over your UK paperwork.

There is nothing stopping you sitting a test here in Alberta and never showing your UK paperwork in the first place???

At the end of the day I was offering a tip.... If someone chooses to follow it they can.... If people are afraid of becoming international criminals, then dont bother

Out of interest - How would you propose that someone who lives 6 months in Canada and 6 months in the UK legally drive a car??

No, the surrendered licence is returned to the DVLA by the Alberta authorities.

I think the spirit of the law is exactly the same as the letter of the law: you cannot hold licences from more than one jurisdiction, period. Doesn't matter where the licence comes from.

Of course not, except that the legality of the outcome is exactly the same.

However the law allows would be my first option.

Getting the licence is easy... NOTHING prepares you for dealing with how people drive here!

I spent ages in my local AMA office trying to exchange my UK license because as it said 'Scotland' on it, the lady wasn't sure whether the agreement applied. Eventually we sorted it out though - but at one point i thought I was going to have to go to another branch or something, there was no convincing her.

Oooo I am glad.

After seeing some cars with Union flags on the back bumper being driven in a manner no different to what is complained about on this site I do have to wonder about the actual quality of the average Brit driver.

When we went there 3 years ago, I discovered they all drive on the wrong side of the road

Drive on the 401 and DVP everyday, You're so learn how to drive like it is arcade game and a Canadian. 6 lane changes + the collects then off ramp, all in one go at 140 clicks to a dead stop in less than minute. Everyday baby...oh yer..bring it on.

I love that about TO. the express and collectors lane...LOL...it's all go in TO....
