[QUOTE=danniek;7681102]He may have been just under the 4 year term, or perhaps he had a photo taken within the last 4 years if he moved addresses.

If you get him to call the registry, they can certainly tell him when the last photo was taken[/QUOTE

He has been here for four years and 2 months - his photo is as old as that as when we moved house 9 months in, we both (I was with him) kept our old photos on the licence, and seeing as we were at the registry 2 weeks ago and they gave him a choice of wether a new photo was wanted or not, then the photo he has is good enough - so I'll not bother phoning and asking how old a photo is on a licence (I know how old it is) - I have more important things to do really

Again, I apologize if you all feel that this information is not correct. Government policy is quite clear on what is required and what is not. Here is the policy from the government guidelines.

A registry agent must:
•Record the last 7 digits of the audit control number (located on the back of the surrendered card) in the Photo Document Section on the operator application form if applicable.

•Capture a photo of the client.
â– A new SIMS image is not required if the image is less than 4 years old.

•Capture the client’s signature.
â– Ensure the client reads and understands the declaration on the operator's licence application prior to signing.

•Issue an interim licence.

And to answer the question, and no offense taken; I work for Alberta Government Services. The group that maintains Alberta Registries. So, by all means, please feel free to ask.

I had subscribed to this board because I had been watching it for a few months and thought that perhaps posters on here may want actual answers to questions BEFORE they come here. There are so many little nuances that come into play when applying for an Alberta licence. Such as the poster in this thread about the DVLNI.

Therefore it is possible that the image on an operators licence CAN be 8years and 364 days old.

It is NOT neccessary to have a photo taken, as you initially stated, every 4 years.

This is sound advice, provided you want to start your new life as a criminal. It's illegal to hold two licences, at least in Alberta; and fraudulent to use a duplicate of a UK licence that has been returned to the issuing authority.
It's also pointless, because you can swap back to UK licence whenever you return to UK.

Or maybe, seeing as you are licensed to drive in the UK it would be good to actually have the license?? or still have a form of official UK ID to go with your passport??

I know of some who spend 6months in the UK and 6 months here.... Legally you then need a license in both countries.

Many reasons, for many people...... if you never leave Canada ahain then don't bother!

Yes and No.... It is illegal to hold two licenses, however this will only become an issue if you try to present your UK license to a cop and they find you have a Canadian one.

There is nothing stopping you from holding another countries license as long as you do not try and use it fraudulently.

If you come to Alberta, swap your UK licence for an Alberta one, you will get a class 5 licence with your date of first licenced from the UK (because of the recirpocal agreement). If you head to BC 6 months later, guess what? You are now going from one province to another, which means you fall into the reciprocal licencing agreement that exists between provinces.

This means, you hand your class 5 Alberta licence to the ICBC branch and they simply hand you a BC licence without having to do testing.

Like any other offence, it's illegal whether you get caught or not. I would be more concerned about the other part - using a UK licence that, as far as the DVLA are concerned, has been surrendered to them. Probably a good enough reason for a car rental company to invalidate your CDW, don't you think?
