I think I have found the definitive answer to what would and would not happen in the UK (specifically, Liverpool) and Australia (specifically, Perth). These two anecdotes are only based on my own experience, but I think you'll agree with me that one wouldn't happen in the other country, and vice versa. All clear so far? Let me explain.
Perth - going through a supermarket checkout - checkout operator says "Have you been listening to the game, how are the Eagles going?". I say "dunno".
Liverpool - going through a supermarket checkout - checkout operator says "Have you been listening to the match, how are the Reds going?". I say "dunno".
Such different countries. Such different people.
