I agree with you there. There is a distinct this area is better than yours thing going on, but on the other side of it you could invite someone from a 'better' area to a BBQ in a 'worse' area and the majority would still come and not look down their noses at you.
In the UK though, they wouldn't even give you the time of day most of the time.

There is a vague socio-economic (blue/white collar) thing going on like everywhere - in some ways this is the worse snobbery as money can be quite vulgar.
There is even an establishment of sorts.
There are rough areas - nothing to do with class - just feral. There are nicer areas.
But where aussie scores is that people mix, mix well, and there are definitely cultural aspects which cross class and background - for sure.
It's absolutely true that you get posh Aussies who seem normal (and Aussies who have a posh accent) but its just not so entrenched.

Big decision, and the expense of visiting for research makes it difficult to do an in depth examination. We moved to Brisbane following a visit on holiday. We chose the area because of the sunshine climate. We were wrong, work was scarce especially in the rural areas. Looked at Spain, but the language difference made employment difficult unless you were setting up in business. Then the corruption was rife! Loads of spivs and con men in Spain looking for an easy buck from starry eyed immigants, also with a weak legal system unlikelyto protect you made things very scary.
Then there is England! Work your nuts off to stay alive, and freeze to death 9 months of the year. Loved Oz, just the employment was not easy to find. I witnessed alot of very skilled people end up mowing lawns or similer to make ends meet. No where is perfect.
