Why Australia ?

I think there is a hierarchy of sorts here. There's certainly an absence of Blue bloods here but there most definately is a strong working class presence in the area in which I live. I drive to the other side of town to Hyde Park and there I find middle- upper middle class people.
Maybe it's wrong to use the word class in terms of Australia, but there is definately different socioeconomic levels in Australia..we are not all equal.

There are differences caused or based on economic reasons but I don't see it as a class inherent thing at all in the sense of what we came from.

I agree with you there. There is a distinct this area is better than yours thing going on, but on the other side of it you could invite someone from a 'better' area to a BBQ in a 'worse' area and the majority would still come and not look down their noses at you.
In the UK though, they wouldn't even give you the time of day most of the time.

The way it worked was that I got redundancy in 2000 and decided to take a year off in Australia -as family had migrated in the early 1990s, and it was a country I had wanted to visit having liked all the Australians I had met as a young adult - infact I recall a formative experience on a summer camp where the Australian counsellors were light years ahead of their Brit and US counsellors in life experience, maturity and attitude (and people knock the education system and culture!). It was English speaking, the FX rate was in my favour - I could fly, I could dive. It met all the criteria for a year off.
Within several months I knew it was a place I seriously wanted to live.
As it turned out a lot of things pointed this way anyhow:
In my early 20s I was always scared of settling down in middle England in a 3bed semi with an ordinary girl.
The thought scared me and still makes me shudder. I wanted something different. My plan was to develop my career - well have a life/fun - through to my late 20s/early 30s and then buy a house on acreage and slow down a bit and raise a family well away from suburbia.
The house price explosion in late 90s stuffed up the UK side of that, so Australia
gave me exactly what I planned for in the end. A beautiful village, woman, and 2 lovely daughters.
