We got our visa granted under my OH occupation and I have kept the whole process to myself and not told work. Now I don't know when to tell them, as we are not going till probably June-August 2010. If I hand my notice in a mnth before we gothen they are going to know that I have known for a long time and I will feel really guilty and they may give me a bad reference to take to Oz with me (I'm a nurse). I am also very excited and want to tell everyone but can't. Can they sack me if I tell them I plan to leave in 6-9 months? I have been there 5 months and need to stay to save for Oz?
If you are from the UK, then it is illegal to give a bad reference, the worst they can do is just not to give one.

My school have known of my plans for more than a year now, we got our visa granted 26th October and hope to fly 1st February but my boss (I'm a teacher) won't let me tell the kids/parents until a fortnight before I go! I am SOOOOO annoyed about this as I wanted the children to share in my excitement and also teach them some interesting Aussie facts kinda thing. A mate whose MIL is recently back from visiting her in Oz has got me Aussie animals pencils and a wee koala keyring, for the pupil's Christmas presents from myself. What's annoying me, is that I will give them these, then a week after the Christmas holidays, when we all go back, I'll be announcing I'm moving to Australia! I'd much prefer to tell them WHENNNN I give them their presents but GRRRR MY BOSS WON'T LET ME!!!!

I SOOOOOOOOOO WANT TO LET IT SLIP OR BE OVERHEARD TELLING SOMEONE!!! LOL

As for WA I believe that 12 months practice is needed for all nursing boards! I notice that you list IELTS - was that you or OH as all nurses need IELTS since July 09?? Loads of luck to you
Thanks. Silly me didn't even think about me taking Ielts test as it was OH who applied for visa. I had read about nurses needing to take IELTS when appying for visa, but it hadn't even registered in my head that I needed it too!! Thanks again I will book it for Jan.

I'm in the process of doing the same for Victoria and it's cheaper if you do the state registration first, you then apply for the moderated assessment from ANC.
I'm not sure but if you have a permanent contract both sides would have to give a min of four weeks notice. Your employers couldn't sack you without reason and they have to make the position not the person redundant. Are you in a union ? you could ask them for advice.
Failing all that, if they let you go in Jan after your 12 mths experience, you could always work for an agency, the hours and times would count towards your experience and you'd probably get more money for your move !
I've just found a site where you register your details and they get in touch with you straight away (nurses.co.uk) They even have agencies for australia, and they can help with registration !
Good luck
Anne
THanks Ann can I apply to register once I get to OZ? I won't be working straight away I am going to stay home to help kids settle and get a feel for the place first.

How old are the kids you teach? If they are as old as my sons 5 and 9 I am sure they would be curious as to why you were giving koala keyring's and Aussie animal pencils, if not the kids, then maybe some curious mums and dads might enquire. How hard is it to keep secrets I am finding it almost impossible!

They're 6, 7 and 8 year olds. Last year the OH and I went away for Christmas to the Canary Islands, the other day a parent on the swimming bus, was remarking at how quickly Christmas had come around, commenting on this time last year, my going on holidays at Christmas. She asked was I going away again this year, to which I commented 'Not at Christmas, no.' CRIKEY I WAS SCREAMING INSIDE 'I'M MOVING TO AUSTRALIAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!' but outside I could say nothing!!!! GRRRRRRRRRR

My advice is to keep it quiet until the time comes to hand your notice in. I made no secret that I planned to move to Australia and there wasnt any noticable effect until the granting of the visa looked imminent. Since then I've been treated a bit like a second class citizen when it comes to management decisions and the assignment of projects. Sad thing is it now looks like I'm going to be stuck here in the UK for another two years or so but the job that I was previously very happy with has become quite unbearable. 'Looking to change jobs for the balance of the time that I have here but this time I'll keep it shtoom .

Hi
yes you can register once you get to Oz and that would help with not having to tell your employers, I would get all your paperwork, or as much as you can, together now tho as it's a pain in the back side !
Try and get the reference, hours worked etc from your employer before you leave as its the last of their priorities and the first of yours, and it will hopefully save loads of calls to Uk chasing them when you'll be wanting to spend time with the kids on the beach !
Just a word of warning, if your other half did the general IELTS tho, you'll need the academic one, and its HARD.

Thanks Ann. I have had the IELTS conversation with my OH and told him I found the general hard enough when I was doing practice ones with him. My downfall is the listening part. After not long finnishing at Uni I think I will be ok with writing and talking. If I can't pass the test and be a nurse in OZ I will be gutted, I'll have to find a different job. At at the mo I hate nursing in this country soo understaffed and the media always blame nurses for bad care. I feel embarrassd to tell people I'm a nurse.

Good advice I never thought about the possibility of not going to OZ when we planned. I am going to keep quiet. I just got my christmas rota and they have given me christmas and boxing day off they might change that if Itell them my plans
