Bush Camping, boating, fishing and generally kicking back and enjoying time with friends and family.
Weather's forecase for 41 c so can't hope for much more than sitting in the river with ice cold beers!
Happy New Year to everyone.

I'd go for harbourside rather than cruise - so many boats on the water on NYE that it gets a bit "choppy". Check out some of the viewing spots further down the harbour, less crowded, but less transport options to get away - so you might have to drive. Watsons Bay has a great view of the Bridge.
Failing that come to "The Beaches" in Thirroul - $20 for a fab live music sesh , with free finger food (oh and great company).

Unfortunately just because the entertainment doesn't start until 7pm that doesn't mean people won't be there a lot earlier, places like Mrs Macquaries chair are often one in one out by early afternoon and friends last year who took their boat on the water were in position by breakfast to get a decent spot.
If you are planning on driving anywhere check the local councils website for restrictions, I know my area (Balmain) has huge traffic restrictions for non-residents from midday. Also remember the Harbour bridge is closed for a couple of hours and the Anzac bridge is closed for a while too.

I think the Sydney fireworks are something you should do in person once and then, unless you have a harbourside balcony or a lovely friend that does, get as far away as possible and watch them on telly, if at all.
We saw them from a chartered party boat in 2001, seven years before we moved here. Fun, but hell to get back to our CBD hotel. First year of living here, we went to a party with a view in Cremorne. Fun, but a long walk home. Last year we lived right in McMahons Point but left it to all the drunk kids and legged it up to The Hunter.

The fireworks are definitely best viewed from the air-conditioned comfort inside the opera house. It's not too outrageously priced for something a bit different. And you get to feel smug standing on the balcony looking down on the plebs who've been sweating their proverbials off since early doors.
This year will be spent at home as I'm far too pregnant and uncomfortable to be braving a crowd.

Jeez there is no way I'd be standing around the foreshore for hours to see some fireworks. Whether it's scorching hot or peeing down, it's not my idea of a fun day out.
Opera House - hmmm, feel like we should do it once and almost did this time, once we'd cancelled the UK flights. Just not sure the gala night is our thing
We have however, nobbut just ten minutes ago, booked the night away from the madness, seeing as it's also our wedding anniversary.
